Repeat questions.

I have been using this site off an on for many years now and I am amazed at the number of questions that are asked over and over, again again. I have gotten to a point where I just skip over a lot of the stuff. My favorite is "What should a 1940 farmall have on it? Come on now, it has what it has and it is what it is.
I guess it may be my age showing, but Goggle is the place to go for quick answers to common questions. But I guess if you want to chat it is okay. Oh well I will shut up because I am certain that I have gotten someones dander up.

I can't tell you the number of times I've seen someone remarking about seeing the same question over and over. ;o)

There've been times when I've seen someone commenting about someone remarking about seeing the same question over and over.

If that's the worst thing in life that you can find to harp about......I sure envy you......

Have a good day....

I can't tell you the number of times I've read where someone has pointed out to someone about the number of times they've seen someone who has just pointed out about the number of times they've seen repeat questions and pointed it out.

Nice but unfortunately without repeat questions what discussion would really take place? How many things are there to really discuss with tractors that are not repeated at some time? I'd rather have a a solid forum revolving around tractors with members willing to help each other then one inundated with grumps who complain about repeat topics.

Sorry about the repeat questions, I just keep forgetting to write down the answers. By the way, you might want to "google" the correct spelling for google. 101* here right now.

I have noticed that a lot of the repeat questions are from newbies. I have been visiting this site for a few years and when I first discovered it I didn't know about the archives and I didn't know that some of the questions I was asking about my 2N had been asked a number of times before. I would not have my good looking, worker 2N in the shape it is in without this site. We must have patience, and if we are bothered by some of the questions, just skip them and move on. A note: many times the archives are no help. I know, I use them.

I have noticed the same things however I think that it is simply the nature of this type of open forum. Newer members (I've only been here less than 2 years) will eventually come up to speed on a lot of things and provide answers so the members who have been here longer don't have to. I don't think anyone here knows it all and bringing up old topics will sometimes bring new and different ideas.

Also, many other forums have stickies that are very popular topics that are kept at the top of the page of the various forums and contain the answers to very popular questions to save a lot of looking and a lot of questions being answered multiple times. Not sure if YT has the ability to do this but it might not be a bad idea.

There is the few here that harped so much on OTs that the only reading that was here for a while was my tractors red and the wheels are round. I really expected those few anals to shut the site down by that.
I agree with Googling, don't ask much here because Google will answer a bunch.
Then there's the questions about everything, I guess groundhog day.

I have told people how to fix a loose JD 720/730 flywheel at least four times in the past year. It came up again a few days ago. Why can't people search past questions/answers?

I was kind of thinking this was a tractor help site and through the last few years I've seen posts from my wife left me to trespassers and my old truck died and someone is complaining about the same question being asked come on, do we need permission to speak? Must be the heat! Come on it's like watching a bad TV program and we can't switch channels? If you don't like the question don't answer it simple as that! It's gotta be a mind thing! Jeez, Cmon!

Lead substitutes, calcium chloride ballast and alternator conversions. Oil capacity/specs/locations which are clearly indicated in the operator's manual.
Folk that can afford a tractor, the upkeep, booze, smokes, sat tv, big screen tv but can't spring a few bucks for the op manual.

I probably ask the same question now and then, I can't remember what I did 4 days ago. Lets just all get along. By the way what is a good oil for my MF air cleaner. Stan

Canola? Or if high temp, go with peanut for less smoking. HTH

"I think all right-thinking people in this country are sick and tired of being told that ordinary, decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired! I'm certainly not, and I'm sick and tired of being told that I am..."

What's really neat is to have someone ask you a question at a tractor show, plow day, or just in conversation, and you tell them, "Hey, there is this really neat site, YTMag, that has a chat board. Here is the website. Get on there and ask them that question, there are some great minds there and they will be happy to help". They fumble around on the computer because they don't really know how to use it, and get the question asked. Then some Idiot has the bash them because it has been asked before, the next idiot has to give them a phone number, that they have no clue as to what it is for, and the poor person slinks away ashamed he was even born!!! Then, the know-it-alls can snicker in the corner. Yep, they ran another one away. Makes um feel pretty good about themselves.

I agree with everything you wrote bob, Thanks fur writing it PS there is no such thing as a stupid question. If a person doesnt know, how eles do you find out.

1-800-522-7448 for JD info. A sentence or two on the internet doesn't compare to the factory manual with pictures and 70+ pages.

I don't mind repeat questions If I didn't answer the first time it was because I didn't know.

If I see the same question posted several times I will proudly step up and show off the good learnen ya guys gave me.8>)

I've been married for quite awhile---all I hear is repeat questions--and I give repeat answers....no I didn't take out the trash, yes those are my underwear in the floor, no I don't have any cash on me (i really do, but she don't need to know)....doesn't mean I'll get rid of my wife--newbies are what keep this site fun...helping someone and getting an old piece of iron chugging is part of being on the site...answer some of the repeat questions...if you've been there and done it - most are thankful, and every once in awhile you learn something new--especially from-JMOR, ZANE, souNdguy, DELL and BRUCE (VA). just my two cents.

Yeabut just think....... Everytime they don't and ask a ????, it gives you a chance to flaunt your selfrightious superiority that you believe you have..............

Something about high temps being responsible for poor reasoning skills or something like that. I can't remember and poor reasoning skills haven't improved with age either.....WOW it hurts to think in this heat.

New people come on the board and I feel it's the responsibility of the knowledgeable people here to help them. Yes-agreed! They should get manuals and parts books but there are times when the manuals don't help and even the experienced among us scratch our heads and go to someone else for an answer. There's nothing that can replace good, old "hands on" experience that a lot of people here have.

So--don't worry about repeat questions.

Many of the questions stem from a machine that has been operated to the point of break down.
If the operator would read the manual they would learn about many points on the machine that require regular inspection and service. Many "breakdowns" and high priced repairs would be prevented.

Like everything and everyone, this board is not and never will be perfect.
There will always be the loafers that want to use someone else instead of buying the manuals and reading them.
However, imagine an excited new to the hobby person that has just gotten their first tractor. They find this site and fire off a few questions before their manuals arrive.
Why would you want to throw water on their flames?
If you do not like redundancy, that is too bad. Life is ful of it.
Besides, I do not remember every last detail and short cut so it is good to read it again.

Should bush go to jail? Does a 8n have history in farmin?

i dunno...lots of thoughts that way...

buickanddeere: I worked for JD dealers for over thirty years. I have never called the company for a manual. You can order it from your LOCAL JD dealer. HE may already have it. If it is an older Dealership he might even have the one for the real old stuff too. IF you want an original old manual there are many places on the Internet that have them for sale.

Spouting off some phone number is not much help. IF THAT IS ALL YOU HAVE TO ADD THEN SKIP TO THE NEXT post and maybe you might have a REAL answer. Your number posting comes across as a smarta$$ remark not help!

TOO many John Deere guys do this type of thing. They turn off a whole bunch of people on JD equipment.

I have to agree. I posted a question on the JD board a year ago. I needed a quick answer on a 430 I was working on for a friend. I don't own a JD myself.

The first response back was "if you know anything about JD's you should know the answer to that question. So and so is the expert here on that subject. Ask him." (I am thinking the respondent didn't know the answer either).

Left me hanging awhile until the so called expert here on that subject came on and gave me the answer I needed. I haven't been back to the JD board since.

Some fellows come to class late. The ones that get straight answers and keep asking the same questions bug me .I do wonder how some got so far in life and know so little.

My wife usually has cash when I dont.I owe her 36.00 now.I notice a lot of repeat questions now that we are older.Met her in 1956 so we are getting used to each other.I remember things she forgets and she does the same for me.I have enough to pay the farm ins if I didnt she would pay it.

Probably the biggest reasons for repeat questions is stubbornness, laziness, and lack of manners.......

1) people are to stubborn to use modern view where the search function is easy.
2) People are too lazy to search
3) it usually only takes a couple of responses before the coffee shop crowd hijacks the thread and takes it another direction.
4) can't forghet the trolls that just can't stand an intelligent thread.... or the self proclaimed genious' (ignoramous' in disguise) that have to boost their self esteem by bashing someone and usually can't come up with anything more intelligent that "get a manual".

Then there are guys like me that have a short term memory problem and ask the same questions several times.

Bottom line..live with it or take your little blue ball and go home.......
