Generators (Honda and Yamaha)

We're looking at getting a new generator and many of the Honda and Yamaha models have electric start. Any of you guys have any opinions on this particular feature. A generator is not something we use a lot, but need it to work when called upon. If it's electric start thats just one more battery to maintain. I believe Honda had a recoil start as a back up, but the electronic was the primary. Thanks for input.

You know, with the advent of very powerful cordless drills with Li-Ion batteries, why hasn't someone made a battery drill start option?

I doubt if any cordless drill would start much of a generator, I have used mine to start small lawnmowers. Possibly if they have a good decompression.

I bought a Honda 3000i 5 years ago. It has been absolutely dependable whether starting in winter or summer. In fact, I would probably have to get the owners manual out and reread it again to figure out where the battery is. Very quiet and pretty good on fuel.

What, nobody can pull a rope anymore? How lame are we getting, anyhow?

Battery start on a 22 HP lawnmower that I use every week is great. Battery start on a 5 HP generator that I use every 5 years or so, not so much.

I agree I am waiting for a battery start chain saw, I think a 19.2 Craftsman L-ion would start one then you could snap it out to use your saw if you wanted to.

Of all the clones. The Champion does very well in all tests against the Honda and Yamaha.
What kind of electrical loads?

i've heard of folks jump starting cars with tool batteries...aint seen or tried it myself.

Battery maintenance isn't as big of a problem now as in years past. I have a Generac 7500 watt generator with electric start. The unit came with a "float" charger which is always plugged in and the battery is now 10 years old and no sign of weakening. There is no place for rope start. The engine is 15 HP.

funny: have a generac 4k, pull start, no batt,,, a 5.5k diesel, comp release, for pull start if batt is dead, pull start to run and charge batt for elect start. both are noisy as he**, would trade both for a 6.5 Honda for my r-v and other uses.....

I got a Colman 8600 with Yamaha motor about three years ago. It has elctric start and came with battery tender. I wanted elec. start because I have a history of being away for multiple days when the power has been out.

We has a honda 6500 watt electric start, but the battery was always dead.Seems like you could only get a couple years out of a battery even when using a tender. We bought one of those whole house generators that comes on when the electric goes off.It uses a car type battery that has a built in charger. It starts it's self every saturday to test.

Make sure it has a good recoil... or that you keep a set of booster cables attached to the generator with easy access to you vehicle. Those silly little batteries are dead every single time you need them.
Carburetors are also generally gummed up every single time you need them... I can't say that's necessarly the case with genuine Honda engines but ti is the case with the Nonda we have. It's pretty well at the point now that I just haul out the 25KVA Magnate MK II PTO gen and run that instead. It's less misery and it works.

I have been thinking about one but was thinking about having one that runs on propane. My propane tank and my main elec. service are within ten feet of each other. Will propane gum up like gas if not used often? Any one have one runing on propane?

if you are asking about mine, the generac does, has a flip switch to idle down when little usage, the diesel doesn't, would stall like a tractor in a tractor pull. lol loud about 90 dbl +-
