Bob Hope in Vietnam

How many of you got to see Bob Hope while in Vietnam? He put on a show at Camp Eagle, 101St Airborne where I was. Everybody in our company got to go except a few of us. We had to pull guard duty but could hear the show over the hill. Would have liked to see him. DH

Not Bob Hope, but I have a 8x10 signed glossy of Miss America 1967 dancing with me on the hangar deck of the USS Constellation (CVA-64)
My wingy got Miss Oklahoma, poor Iceman.Actually "Scout". LOL

He came to BEARCAT I think it was when I was there,I was with 9 th Infantry.
I laid in the barracks and got some rest.
#1,don't like crowds #2 That big of a crowd, and well advertised would have been a rocket/or/ sappers dream.
Scared? unitersted? don't matter I didn't feel like I was missing much.

I was born in 1960, so the answer to your question is "No, not me". However, I remember as a kid watching Bob Hope and many stars doing the shows from Vietnam, I think possibly through the USO if my memory serves me correctly. My parents did not miss one of his televised shows from Vietnam. I gotta say, now that I'm older and have a better understanding and respect for that part of our nation's history, can honestly say God bless his soul for what he did, and for those stars and support crews that traveled with his shows. The stars back then had heart that stars today do not. Not all stars, but I guess you know what I mean. Today, I would find it hard to have respect or interest for anyone living in Hollyweird.

And by the way, to our veterans, each and every last one, thanks, and may God always bless. I too served much later, never saw combat, thankfully.

Its not Vietnam, but every now and then I go back and read Patton's then top secret address of the troops prior to Operation Overlord. That was a different time, much different than today, thats for sure. A very powerful and memorable speech for all occasions, no punches pulled (Section 2)...

I'll never understand why but I was picked to go see him at Chu Chi christmas of 68. The seat I had wasn't to bad seeing it live but the instamatic kodak didn't show much on stage. One of the times I still remember how HOT it was.

Flew in from the field (199th Light Infantry) and back out in a couple of hours. Saw him at Long Binh. 1967. Didn't even stop for a shower or change of fatigues.

Never saw Bob but did get to have the fun. Ya fun not of having a President on board the JFK CV67 and also had one of the many Miss Americas on board the same ship. Both times was not much fun since we spend days cleaning and then when that was done we cleaned more

I was a "Vietnam Era" veteran, but didn't go to Vietnam. Always was grateful for the folks who went over to entertain the troops. Lots of Hollywood types didn't approve of the war, but some went anyhow, putting the well-being of the troops ahead of their politics. Good for them.

He came to LongBinh in 71. So many tv cameras you couldn't so him. Went back to Barrack and watched him on tv. Sammy Davis Jr. put on a good show that I got to see.

Spent my year there in the Combat Engineers, never seen anybody or anything that resembled entertainment, just soaked up that agent orange they sprayed on us and worked 24/7. War never changes, just the people and places change!!

I was at the show on Eagle in 71 that also included Jim Neighbors (SP?), the Gold Diggers (wow) and others. Don't know if that is the year you are referring to or not. 105 artillery unit, left in Aug. 72.

thanx mark for posting pattons speach , 3 neighbor MEN served for him , , and had a hi regard for his style of leadership .// they are one now , AND by golly they were good men

I saw him at long binh in 66 or 67, can't remember which year. Joey Heatherton was there too. We took buses from ben hoa air base. There were some army troops in jeeps with machine guns mounted in front, in back and between the buses. The buses had expanded metal screens over the windows to keep out hand granades. I was so far back that I couldn't see too much.

wasn't able [old enough] to serve that era, only saw him on t-v...my hats off to those who was there fighting for our country.

I saw him at Phu Cat with Rosie Greer and Ann Margaret. She wore a black body-suit--MEOW!! It was hard to see, but I'm sure glad I saw her. IIRC, Miss America was there also. I was there from July 68-July 69.

My entire tour of duty was spent at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri so no, I didn't see Bob in Vietnam.

I did however see the show he put on at FLW. Also quite a number of other shows as I was an MP and was assigned security to several of them.

I was personally introduced to Buck Owens after his show when he brought the wheelchair bound daughter of an MP up stage to visit with her and her dad. Sure did make her day.

The Harlem Globetrotters game was a fun show to see in person.
A few photos taken during 208th MP Co. assignment.

Got to see him during my tours 65-67. Xmass of 66. Phyliss Diller, joy Heatherton and others I can not recall now. Come right off listing post that morning. Muddy boots and semlled like roadkill but I enjoyed the show.

I saw the show in Takhli, Thailand during the '65 Christmas season.
I had an old Kodak 8mm mechanical camera. It couldn't keep up with Joey Heatherton. Her entire routine was a blur.

I saw Bob Hope in Korea, well before the Viet-
Nam conflict,(which you young fellers are talking
about)He had Janis Paige, Anyone remember her?,
in a skimpy outfit. Later, my wife tried to
Throw my photos away,"so the Kids wouldn't see
them", but i've still got them, a reminder of my
Army days on "Freedoms Frontier".
