how much solar panel?? Maintain fence charger battery...

Looking at the ones online at HF. Pastures are an acre and smaller with one just a little bigger so nor real drain on the charger. As/is, a full battery (junkyard battery) lasts several weeks. Want to use some small metal boxes I found to put on a post with the battery and charger inside and a solar panel on top. I see 1.5, 5, and 15 watt . Think if I start with a full charge that the 1.5 watt would maintain or do I need to go bigger?

Anyone used the HF stuff, are they OK outdoors (advertise laying them on the dash)?

Thanks, Dave

As I recall Dave, that little one at HF isn't waterproof, hence why it says lay on the dashboard. Does it ever rain in Germany?

Not when we needed to grow hay, but now that we are trying to get cut it does.....

Any idea of a source for weatherproof panels that are reasonable? Maybe the 5 watt one??

There are fence charger with solar panels alredy on them. Have one we have used for years, on movable fence for rotational grazing. Why cobble up something. Do it right the first time.gitrib

Pretty stuff gets stolen. I've got several solar chargers already but they are 6 volt and don't quite pack the punch I need with a couple horses and to keep wild hogs out of the pasture.

What do you have? I have parmak 6 volt and was looking at the 12 volt ones just can't justify the $$$ when a 12 volt car battery model is 85 bucks and I get batteries for free (buddy works at the junk yard on post)...... As far as thieves, in 11 years, none of my American stuff has been touched. Guy has a pasture right next to one of mine and put model out that is sold in german stores 30 ft from mine and had it stolen in a day.

I used the little 1.5 watt on a charger / battery setup, it helps but will not maintain the battery at charge with that load.

A fellow on another site told of using the HF 5 watt panel with his fence charger, said it kept the battery full and stood the weather .

Most of the good factory fence chargers with solar panel like the Galliger, use a 12V 5 watt panel.

If I'd put out a gallagher here, folks would smell it for miles and it'd be gone before I got out of site....

i got one of those red funny shaped 1.5 watt panels from HF...it helps some on the charge but wont maintain full time...panel been outside for about 3 years and i'm pretty sure it got rained on real good last year...still showing output.
go with the 5 watt or larger and make sure it has a blocking diode so battery doesnt discharge at nite.

I'm using the 1.5 watt from HF. It's been outside for over 2 years. Been rained on a lot and still works. As for keeping the battery charged; it does great in summer/fall (April thru November), and the battery will still hold thru Feb, but the solar panel can't keep up with it, so I take the battery to the shop once a year, usually January, and top charge. I'm using a large truck battery.

For 20 bucks, I'll try it. Less likely to get stolen. I'll get the 5watt one for one place I have that is a little sun challenged thru winter and I can mount it more permanent because I own that place.

Thanks

You shouldn't have any problems if you're going with the 5 watt. If I hadn't already had my 1.5w solar panel, and a spare battery, and a new 12 volt fence energizer (bought cheap at auction) it would be hard to beat the "all in one" factory made solar energizers. But, I'm just using this one for an electric charged bump gate, and about one quarter mile single wire.
