how do you get the shift lever out.I need to get to the shift fork. cant figure whats holding the gear shift in.

The top of your transmission have a cover plate? or it should. Remove the bolts surrounding the outer perimeter of the plate, and lift upwards. This done will remove the shift lever out of it's shift brackets. After draining oil from the gear box, you'll be able to see the forks easily and and by removing the springs and the shifting lock balls slide the shift rail back after unscrewing the set screw that retains the shift fork to the shift rail. the shift fork should lift up through the top of the case with a little wiggling for replacement.

Also if the fork is shattered, pour clean oil through the box to remove any possibly metal shards and replace with new oil. This will protect against any abnormal wear.
