Battery life reduced by vibrations?

My small one cylinder diesel tractor has a 12V 70 Ah starting battery. The battery box is attached rigidly to the tractor frame and vibrates with the engine, it being a single cylinder job. The tractor has a generator and lights.
The life I get out of this battery compared to the life of batteries used with four and six cylinder diesel engines seems a lot less. Are the vibrations my problem or is there another problem I should look at?
If the vibrations are to blame, what can I do to reduce the battery's suffering?
Thanks, Hendrik

use a piece of those rubber mats they sell to go under washing machines to absorb the shock. Should be able to find one in whatever you folks have for home improvement stores or IKEA. A piece of thick carpet will work also.

Expect that your battey life might be reduced by vibration. On the other hand, I"ve had some batteries last a good long time in high shock & vibration applications. One of the best was an automotive type battery that came new on a JD 140 garden tractor - JD brand. That thing lasted over 25 years. And we showed it no mercy - even used it for the jumper starter for other vehicles...

Vibration will shake the brittle lead sulphate off the plates to bottom of the cell, capacity gone forever. Can you move the battery to another location?

At work we have a steel roller that had the same problems, switched to an Optima battery a sealed gel battery end of problems. chris

Great choice on the Optima battery matthies.

One important point though, they are a sealed AGM battery, not a Gel battery. Big difference in how and where they can operate, even though they are both spill proof.

Thank y'all. I will try the cushioning first, because I'm afraid an Optima will not fit in the battery box, besides the cost :=(

I worked for 10 tears in an Exide battery factory. I know that some batteries have the elements glued to the bottom of the container and some do not. We built millions of batteries for John Deere And I believe they were all glued in. The Deere batteries may cost a few more dollars but might be worth a try.
