OT a sign of the times

I have been putting things out by the road for years with a 'free'
sign at either end of the pile. I have gotten rid of untold heaps of
stuff this way, and I had the same signs for years, painted on
plywood scraps about 2 feet square. Last year someone took the
signs as well as whatever was there, and I made new ones. I
have been through three or four sets of signs now and people
keep taking them, even though now I just am using scraps of
1x8 or whatever from the sawmill. I don't think it is some one
person who takes them, because they always disappear at the
same time as the free stuff and there are different vehicles each
time. I can't imagine what anyone would want with them, but I
guess if they want them I don't mind making more.

Put a 'note' on each sign-"please leave the sign".I did that when the trashman started takeing the trashcan-it worked!

I always set my extra apples out by the road. "free, take as many as you want but please use what you take" Set them out there in three five gallon buckets and then put a pile of plastic grocery bags there. For years like you I had the same buckets and everyone put them in the bags. Two years ago someone dumped the apples out and took the buckets. Go figure.

Maybe its someone that thinks the signs are "Free For The Taking" and that someone is stealing the other stuff. Hey, I reroofed my whole roof with signs that said "Free For The Taking" before I found out that it was the bundles of unmatching shingles that were free for the taking. Well, at least the signs on my roof match, for the most part.

I had the same problem, until I started just making the signs on a piece of cardboard, with black marking pen.

I just set some things out the other day. I had 2 old french exterior door panels that had bad spots and large glass area. I had them leaning up behind the garage trying to find a place to haul them for junk. every construction junk drop off wanted at least $45 min truck load.
I just set them out by the road marked FREE and in only 2 days there gone ! They would make good chicken coop doors ?
Got some other stuff out there with prices now.
I chain the good stuff to an electric pole.
If it comes up missing no great loss either.
