Wheat Harvest (couple pics)

Hey guys,

Spent the afternoon helping Grandad and Uncle cut wheat (don't know that I'm a lot of help, but helped switch fields and jockey a couple trucks)

They first tried this early afternoon, but moisture was close to 19, so we waited.. Got going about 3pm, was down to 15%. Running anywhere from mid 70's to low 90's per acre.. My folks farm was right around a 85 bpa average.. SE Lower Michigan. Would have been a shade better if we didn't have so much hurt from all the rain this spring, but then the stuff on the higher ground would have been worse, so I guess it's 6 in one hand, half dozen in the other.

Wow. Hard to believe it is harvest season already. I have some spring wheat planted here in so. Mn. Ours always comes ripe 1st. week in August.

Reminds me of one of the few things that I can still count on being made in the USA, Breakfast! Thanks to all who participated.

Harvest ended 3 weeks ago here in western Ohio

Looks like good wheat, we'll probably start next week here in SW Ontario, although with our wheat I'm not very excited, it doesn't look good.

Steve: Most of our fields here locally are 20 +/- acres.. Mom and dad have a 40, after we take the 2 house lots out (theirs and mine) there's about 36, and the county drain splits it in half, so we end up with close to 20's. The field the pics are from is about 58 acres.. so makes it a bit larger as it's not broke up by ditches and that. Ground here is FLAT.. with the exception of a stray sand hill here and there.. A bit north/west of here it's a lot more "rolling".. But they say years back we were under Lake Erie here. Maps from the 1800's have our area marked as the "Black Swamp".

Belgian: Ours is "winter wheat".. I've asked a few times why no one here plants "spring wheat" as it seems to be a acceptable practice a lot of other places.. Never really did get an answer. We're about a week behind "normal" this year, last year the combine was washed, waxed, and put to bed on the 6th of July. We'd even drill soybeans behind some of the wheat, but as dry as things are, that's nit happening.

Jordan: The wheat is probably the only respectable crop we'll get this year, unless we get RAIN.. and SOON!! We haven't hardly had an inch here since the first of June, and we've had quite a few days above 90 already this year (not too common for us) and come Sunday, it looks like we're in for 90's for another week, and no rain to speak of.

Hopefully today we'll get wheat wrapped up.. was on the track yesterday until we had a small fire.. Lost a bearing and got some dust smoldering. Lost 3 hours there, got back going, got one truck loaded, and broke the drive belt on the grain table at 6 last night.. We have about 30 acres still to go.

You must have more than 98 acres to afford a combine like that!!!

Ron, You'd be correct.. LOL.. The family (grandpa and uncle) work right around 1000 acres. Had about 150 acres of wheat total.

I'm the only one in the "next generation" interested in farming, so I help as much as they can keep me busy (in between working at the day job)

I farmed "on my own" a couple years with my "junk", but due to work issues, I gave it up, so now I just help them.. Works a lot better really.
