OT- duramax fuel filter problem

My 01 chevy duramax was running fine when i decided to change the fuel filter.I bought a new filter from napa.It was made of plastic and made a little different than the original, but fit fine and seemed to be ok till the next day when the truck wouldn't start, just crank.I pumped the primer lever 5 or 6 times till it got tight and the engine started and ran fine. It's done that a couple times now.I guess it's getting air from somewhere, but i don't see any fuel leaks.Should i just throw the napa filter away and get one from GM?

The new plastic NAPA filters are much easier to get the wrench around with thier skinnier profile. Did you loosen the the screw on top of the housing and bleed it according to the operators manual? Make sure you seated the o-ring on the top and bottom of th filter correctly. I've even seen the old o-ring stuck into the housing. It's possible you have a cracked water sensor that screws into the bottom of the filter, but that usually allows it to run, but not accelerate well.

Got a buddy with a F350 that had a similar sounding problem with the fuel system on his truck after changing the filters. I change them, everything was done by the book, and the the truck ran fine when it left and for a week or so afterwards. When it first acted up he took it to the dealer to let them look at it. he said it took them a few hours to figure out the problem and what they finally diagnosed was that air had gotten into the fuel system when the filters were changed, which was normal, but the problem was that all of it hadn't purged out when the purge proceedure was done after changing the filters. They never came up with an actual reason for why it happened but my buddy said they did something different when they bled it than was actually called for in the book and it solved the problem.

Most likely the "O" rings are bad in the primer pump and it has been leaking (letting air INTO the fuel system) since you used it to prime the new filter.

It's a COMMON problem with those filter heads.

One of the diesel truck mags had an article on this problem within the last year or so, but I can't put my hands on that issue at the moment.

See ebay auction #130498587893 for ONE supplier of kits.

(DISCLAIMER... I have NO connection to the seller, nor have I bought from him.)

have a 03 ford 6.0 p/s, went to advance auto parts, they didn"t have a motor craft filter, gave me purolator brand, truck ran sh!@#y, took back and got m/cft. compared both, purolator was 1/16 differ, causing filter to crush in housing and restricting fuel. any more seems that you need to stay with oem"s....NCwayne, when i change filters [2], has eletric fuel pump, after starting i put pedal half way to get any air out. now thats my 6.0, don"t know if d/max could do same problems.

Don't remember the whole proceedure without looking at the book, but on my buddies truck you turned the key switch on and off several times in a cetrain way to make it prime itself but not start. Once primed I always start one and run about half throttle for awhile to make sure the air is out of the system. Like I said once the filters were changed he drove the truck for several weeks before the problem happened and he took it to the dealer. They said the air had to have gotten into the system when the filters were changed as they couldn't think of any other way for it to have gotten in there. Even so they couldn't explain why it hadn't primed properly to start with nor why he was able to drive it for so long before it showed up as a problem.

possible that little vent screw on top got stripped or has a fine crack in it. I believe the sell stainless steel replacements.

The O ring is on the filter, nothing to seat.I loosened the screw, pumped it 3 times and fuel came out.I drove it 60 miles the next day with no problem. The next day it wouldn't start till i pumped the primer 5 or 6 times.

Large GM dealer told me they tow up to five a week in with plastic fuel filters. People put on to tight and cracks top of filter. Then it gets air. Told me to never use anything other than metal.

Check the reusable water sensor assembly that screws into the bottom of the filter for a crack. I had a similar problem on my Duramax and it had a tiny crack in that plasic piece that would leak down real slow. also make sure the water bleed valve on the bottom is shut completely.
