Quad range on 4430 JD

Anyone tell me why me 4430 does not shift to 1st or 3ed in any range after tractor warms up, may take a couple hours to warm up enough for it to quit in 1 and 3.

Does it start to slip or just not shift??? If it is slipping than you have a problem in the Hi-LO clutch pack or are losing charge pump pressure. If it does not shift at all than you need to check and see if the shift linkage is shifting the valve all of the way. As the Cab mounts wear that will change the shifting linkage. Yours may be just barely shifting when cold and when hot the valve may shift just a little harder and the linkage will not shift it. You can adjust it to work better.

The 2 speed(hi-lo) shifts from hyd pressure. Back when 4430's were nearly new a line that clamped to the hi-lo drum would have the clamp break causing same symptoms. I suggest checking psi with a gauge. If you continue to operate with it slipping you'll probably burn up the clutches in the hi-lo. If your tractor hasn't been updated to new style clamp it can be accomplished without spitting the tractor.

If it is slipping then it is splitting time. TxJim is right about that clip but if it has slipped then the clutch disks are more than likely shot. It does not take very long running them slipping. However before you split the tractor you need to check the pressures out to make sure what is going on. So the correct things are fixed.

You should drain the hydraulic oil and check the sump screen. If it is full of metal like stuff then the brakes have failed and that causes the charge pump to drop the operating pressure on the Hi-LO clutch pack. If it is clean put in a new filter and refill with hydraulic oil. Then you need to have it checked out with pressure gages. You will either need a repair manual or have someone that knows how to do it. It is too involved to describe on a forum like this.

DO NOT RUN IT ANY more!!!!! You can damage the Hi-Lo clutch drum, $1180 new, plus some other things. IF you have just blew the piston rings and need new disks then it is not too high of a fix. IF you keep going then it will get much more expensive.

thanks for the advice, the brakes still work fine and the baler gate still lifts and closes just fine. Do you think it hurts to drive it if only 2nd and 4th are used until we get someone to work on it?
