Taken in the neighbours very weedy field, a pair of coyotes searching for mice did not care the least about the tractor.
Sorry about the quality, one handed cell pic on a 4 year old phone.

What's the difference between an eastern coyote and the ones we have here in the midwest?

Isn't a coyote a coyote?

Just wondering???

Pheasent population plumeted in the 70s' long before the coyote explosion. They are fine by me as long as they keep hunting woodchucks and fawns, way too many of both around me. I could shoot several a year from the tractor seat but I mostly pass. I only shoot them when they start getting close to the barn yard. Woodchucks, that is a different story.

The western coyote is a small intelligent and curious animal that hunts alone or in pairs/family group.
The Eastern Red Wolf is a large powerful but shy wolf that hunts in packs.
The eastern coyote is a cross between the two. Larger, stronger, more intelligent, curious, hunts in packs and has no fear.
Also known as Canis Soup.

As a kid during the Big War we slept outside in the back yard. Every night the coyotes would put on quite a show up on the hill behind the house' I was real good at calling them, after awhile Grampa would tells us to shut up and go to sleep.

yep,i have a old single shot 12ga i carry on the tractor just for such occasions.biggest one i recall shooting weighed right at 45 lbs here.funny how animals know what you are doing, ive seen (counted) 25 hawks in the same little five acre patch following the mower also.

With this drought we're experiencing down here in Texas, I can only imagine what some of these song dogs are going through. I suspect by August the chupacabra sightings will start surfacing again as the mange and summer diseases set in on these things.

Cool pic by the way!

I was going to shoot one once, an utter like a pig, like the Romulus and Remus statue, must have had a big litter I was thinking, as I got the rifle ready for a shot from the running tractor, they know something's up when you turn things off eh? So she swallowed 3 mice while I was sighting in. I said "gosh, wish the cat would catch mice that fast." So... starting having second thoughts...I put the gun down, drove back the house, and shot the cat.

i live at the edge of town, woods on 2 sides. i feed the ferral cats from the woods. 3 yrs ago therewhere 19,20 cats here off n on, now 5 to 7 cats is all. i've got pics n vidio of the cyotes that are around my house, don't seem to be afraid of nothing. they lay in drive waiting on cats to finish eatin'. i go out n chase 'em off, but the big boy, he doesn't chalange me, but you have to get at him 2 or 3 times more agressive then you do the girls. when fire engins sound,(after dusk), you can hear at least 4,5 adults n half dozen pups yipin' at the sireans. mailman has seen 'em 6 blocks on in town. i enjoy watching them, but they can be destuctive. thanks.

Two years ago we had a professional trapper go after them on 300 acres of river bottom. In that winter he trapped forty five plus skunks & bobcats sure made a difference on the population.

The reason for no pheasants and quail is habitat loss, they both need "edges" not woods and not row crop fields.
