I can give you the report on the one i looked at. Also question on the 304 engine was it an ih make or amc? You can email me ir you want.

304"s by AMC and IH were different engines, that,
by coincidence, had the same displacement.
AMC 7 main bearing 6 cylinders were used in late
model Scout II"s, before IH quit the small truck
business.
Chrysler still uses that 6 cylinder engine in
Jeep models because they couldn"t build a better engine.

The only AMC engine that IH ever used was in the '73-'74 era, and they bought some AMC 401's after they realized that production on the IH 392 couldn't keep up with demand [since it was also used in their medium-duty truck line].

CORRECTION: I meant to say was, the only AMC V8 engine IH used was the 401.

From '69 on, IH used the AMC sixes, because they were already compliant with emission requirements and IH's sixes weren't.

LOL my 1970 800A Scout had a stock from the IH factory AMC 232 in line 6. I know it was the AMC engine because dad was driving a 69 Rebel SST wagon with the 232 and I had a 71 Grimlin with the 232. When I needed the engine rebuilt in the Scout dad and I pulled the Grimlin engine, rebuilt it and put it in the Scout, then next time I was home on leave rebuilt the scout engine and put it in his Rebel.

I think its been several years since the 4.0 6 has been used by jeep. The 4.0 is a great engine if you don"t let a little noise bother you !!

That explains the customer who came in with a scout with an AMC motor in it. It had a 4 barrel in it and it had been in a lot of shops and nobody could figure out why it ran so bad, it would only hit on two cylinders and it did not make any difference which plug wires you disconnected it would run on two cyl. After checking the plugs, wiring and the points I noticed there was no condenser in it, ran fine after that. This one was not factory, the oil pan would hit the front axle if you got it in a bind.
