Ford 8N 3 point just stopped working

My neighbor has an 8N and the hydralics have always worked reliably although kinds odd in that the 3 point will always go up or down and never realy settle anywhere - but thats another story. This past winter he got it out to plow snow and the 3 point simply doesn't work. If you have nothing at all on the arms, they will go up after a while, but if you hook an implement to it, no go. I don't know much at all about an 8N, any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanx

that tractor is 60+ years old.3 things could be happening-together or seperatly.trans oil level is low;a bunch of crap is in the pump intake sump,'starveing' the pump;the pump is simply worn out from 60years of pumping dirty, unfiltered trans oil,in which case the punp would need a rebuild

The oil is a couple years old, we changed it. Also clean and when we changed it didn't find crud, etc. Certainly possible the pump just stopped working - where is it located anyway? In the rear end I'm assuming?

Thnx!

From what you said about it being in the winter, I have that problem with my 9n. If its cold the oil is just too thick for the pump. If its 30 or colder I start my tractor and let it run for about 5 min with the pto on to move some oil in the rearend. Then drive it for a bit. That oil gets really thick and you can hear the strain on the engine. Anyway if he has the problem now he could have messed the pump up with the thicker oil. If he hasn't tried it yet, try it again and maybe itll work.

Your symptom(s) could be the result of several issues, Norm, such as the relief valve, cylinder/lift cover gaskets, lift piston/cylinder, etc.

Post your problem on the 9N, 2N, 8N Board above for better results. Aside from myself, there are others well skilled in Ford hydraulics issues there.
