Hydralics on Ford 961

I'm frustrated and I hope someone can help me. I bought a 961 last fall and since then have found a number of things wrong with it that were not evident when I bought it and were not told to me. Buyer Beware I guess.

Well, I'm perplexed about the hydralics, namely the 3 point. I thought that you were supposed to be able to move the lever up a little and the 3P would go up a little and stop, down a little on the lever and the 3P goes down a little and stops. Well, thats sure not what mine is doing. It seems there is no place I can put the lever where the 3P won't drift down or go up. I've put the draft control lever in both positions and it doesn't make any difference. I'm assuming something is wrong but what? Second issue I have is that if the tractor sits for a while (and I've found this can be anything from a few days to a week or two, the hyd pump loses prime. Now I know what the 3" nipple with a cap on it screwed into the pump is, you take the cap off till the pump gets some oil in it then back on before it starts spitting oil out at you!

Any suggestions or knowledge would be much appreciated.

Thanx

For the first issue, Sounds like a cam follower pin issue. Good news is it's a couple buck metal pin. Bad news is you get to take the rear end apart to get to it.

The first issue is almost certainly the result of a badly worn cam follower pin, while the second issue is likely the result of worn pump seals.

Buy an I&T FO-20 manual and follow the "alternative" procedures (special tools not needed) to adjust the draft and position adjustments AFTER replacing the cam follower pin.

Of course you will wish to replace the lift cylinder O ring and back up washer and thoroughly clean/flush the hydraulic sump while you have the lift cover off.

For better results, post Ford issues on the Ford forum above in the future.

Thanks Dean and Paul for the info, I didn't notice that there were tractor specific boards to post on, sure will do that in the future. I already have a Ford service manual for the tractor so will pull it out and see what it takes to replace this pin and the other items you mentioned. I'm assuming the pin is available at a Ford dealer? I have a couple fairly close and have already gotten some parts. As for the oil, it is terribly dirty and needs changing badly so will do that and flush the system when it's apart. This tractor has seen a lot of miles so I'm finding that things that are normal wear points are very worn and things that are not normal wear points even have wear.

As for the pump, are these seals something that I can replace myself or should I send the pump off to have it rebuilt? I can overhaul an engine any day but have never gotten into anything hydralic and I know the pump has very close tolerances so it's a bit intimidating. Your advice would be appreciated!
