600 tractor starting in gear

Replaced the starter button on top of the transmission cover and now the tractor will start in gear. Did I lose something in the safety mechanism as the bar seems sloopy that is under the cover?

Yes. it is a 600 series. There is a bar that attaches to the shift lever but it doesn't stay up high enough to not allow the starter button to start.

Most likely the wire connecting the starter switch is grounded to the chassis somewhere.

Trying not to be dumb, but do you mean the wire from the starter solenoid to the starter button or from the starter solenoid to the ignition key.

The new starter button does seem to engage the starter as soon as you start to depress the starter button

I know your tractor is a 600 but 600 what? is it ford ihc massey? what year is it? can you post a pic of it? This would help us to figure out what would be wrong with it. thanx :D

It is a Ford 600 series, 1957 with a 5 speed transmission. It has a safety feature that isn't suppose to allow it to start in gear. It has a 6 volt system with a positive ground.

Starter wasn't getting spark, so replaced starter solenoid and starter button, cleaned all connections and replaced cable from solinoid to starter. Now the safetymfeature doesn't.

Thanks for any help

sounds like to me that there is a wire not making contact some where. Maybe make another post and ask for bison he knows lots about that kind of stuff.
