my check engine light came on in my 1995 geo tracker Asked about getting it checked out the guy said 97 dollars to hook it up to the machine to tell me why the light is on, Any opinions? I didnt do anything still driving with the check engine light on

try this website, the guy knows alot about trackers and sidekicks. it helped me with mine.

For that money you could get a code reader at any big discount or auto parts store and read it yourself. What else would be that you"d have the instrument for further investigation.

There's more to it than just knowing the code. The shop I work for charges a similar amount. What is included is what it takes to repair, not just the code number.

I have a 97 1600 cc, 16V 5spd. wagon model. Light came om near 80k
Still on every day, still getting 31 mpg, no problems. I did replace the timing gear and water pump at 80K.

Depending on the year as to if a part store can check it out. I know I tried that on my Mit. Mighty max truck and they could not hook up to it but it is a 1993. If it is newer you stand a good chance a good auto parts store can check it out

Shoot, You can go BUY a scanner for that much money.
Go to autozone, advanced auto, napa etc. Ask them if you can borrow a scanner, They take your license, give you the scanner and when you return get your license back. Orrr they will do it themselves, and tell you possible causes for free.

Hope this helps- Pat

disconnect the battery for a couple minutes and hook it back up (should reset) then loosen the gas cap and run it to see if it comes on again. Had a 91 that I bought a year old that I'd worry if the light DIDN'T come on.

My gas cap wasn't venting.

depending on the year, the gas cap being loose without vacuum will
cause the light to come on, that happens with my jeep cherokee
sport.

I have to do that too./ Im not a very good mechanic,I got one quote of 600 dollars to replace the timing belt and water pump My wife hates the little tracker,it was given to us,it runs good, but I will have a hard time getting her to ok spending money on it,she feels it is a death trap and doesnt like me driving it.

My wife is the same way...........My favorite car was a little VW Polo wagen with a 1.0 liter motor, laughed at gas stations and was easy to work on. Finally got tired of the nagging and didn't have the heart to get rid of her (wife)so stepped up to a golf. Not much difference but shut her up.
Bout came unglued when she snipped out one day "shoulda kept the polo, got better gas mileage"...... And folks wonder why my people skills suck.... If it was a freebie, you got nothing to lose by either driving it til it breaks or trying to swap the belt/pump yourself (don't think it#s a big deal). Get your parts from rock auto and it should only be a few bucks.
have fun,

Dave

remove the panel by your leftknee, fish around for a slide switch, slide it into opposite dirtection, then leave it there for another 80k miles.

You are welcome, glad I could contribute to the health of your tracker. I have a solid appreciation for their ruggedness.

By the way, I nearly always look at your postings, I enjoy your pictures and comments.

Stick a piece of black plastic tape over that area, and you won't see it. My guages aren't visible on my 97 Ranger, for all of the black tape! Rusty J.
