O/T - Snakes

I have some issues with snakes (rat snakes) getting into the basement, crawlspace, and attic of my house. It's a 100 year old house, so I doubt I will be able to find every hole, but I have been trying. There are springs on the farm - behind the barn and one in the hog pen - so there are always going to be snakes. I DON'T WANT THEM IN THE HOUSE. The cats will kill them if they see them, but I want something that will repel them. I know that making sure there aren't any mice is part of it, but is there anything I can put in the yard or around the house that will help?

There are a ton of snake repellants, go to Goggle and type it in. Liquid fence works well.

I'd love to have a few blacksnakes.... There are 2 snakes (one poison and one non) in our area and a legless lizard. Not many of either except for the legless lizards. Was always nice to know blacksnakes were around....

We used to have a little garter snake that came in the house somehow and lived in the basement. We just left it alone to eat crickets down there. It did get upstairs twice and I carried it back down to the basement.

Along that note. Marilyn got this air freshener that shoots a shot of stuff out whenever it senses motion. It's above the washing machine right before the basement stairs. She didn't tell me about it and for the first couple of days I couldn't figure out what that hiss was when I went to the basement. I even got the flashlight out and checked behind the washing machine for a snake. Finally my son told me it makes him jump everytime he walks past that air freshener, so then I knew but it still raises my heart rate a bit. Jim

The snakes would not go in your house if there was nothing to eat. You have mice. Which would you rather have? Snakes are creepy, but they are clean and don't carry desease or fill your walls and attic with droppings. Get rid of the mice. the snakes will disappear too.
