Anybody plugged any Zoysia?

I sprayed a portion of my yard (poor stand of bermuda) about 4 weeks ago with Glyphosphate. I then plugged some Zoysia in my yard about 3 and 1/2 weeks ago. The plugs are alive and look good but they really seem not to be doing anything. Most of what I read says they will connect in one to two growing seasons. If they dont hurry they are not going to make it.

I decided that plugging was for the birds. I borrowed a sod cutter and laid two 40 yard pallets in stips of sod which made the process much faster but this process usesed a great deal more sod.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I broadcasted the suggested dose of N,P and K last week. I just purchased some MSMA to rid myself of my Dallisgrass and Goosegrass. I read that keeping it weed free is the key to faster spread.

You must live in the Southern half of the country, I have never seen that here in Penna. Once when I was traveling in OK I saw a yard going in like that and being curious stopped to talk to the Owner and he said he would have to mow it every 2nd day to encourage the spreading. Have no idea anymore if it would have been a similar variety to the Zoysia you are growing but might be something to think about.

Good Luck,

We plugged some Zoysia maybe 20 years ago. Did fine till this year. I think our Indiana drouth last summer ended the Zoysia

I studied it some in school. I would rake out tall that dead bermuda/thatch. The runners will want to lay on soil to root. I agree with mowing, it will help with spreading and weed control. I would suggest the use of a pre-emergent like prodiamine or pendamethaline, next season. Otherwise, it will burn the roots of your spreading grass.

Zoysia is very slow growing. Bermuda grows quite a bit quicker.

I did a similar thing that you did in step 1. I bought 2 pallets of bermuda, layed it out then cut it into 6" squares with a gas edger and scatterred it thru the yard. It was about a 10,000 sq. foot area. it took 2 years for it to fill in.

i would have burned that dead bermuda before planting the Zoysia. I don't think I'd do that until this winter when it all goes dormant now.

I'd have regraded that big lump, in the middle of the lawn, prior to puttin in grass, but that's just me... Couple of tips for zoysia: you can burn off the winter dormant zoysia, in early spring, this breaks the winter dormancy, and kills any early season weeds. If you are in a greenie weenie area, which has ordinances against burning, you can spray over the dormant zoysia with roundup, and it will take out the weeds, without hurting the zoysia. 2'x 2' grid pattern of zoysia plugs took 10 years to close, around here. Your pattern should come together in about 3, I'd guess.

Zoysia is slow and it sends out runners. After it's estabilished it will spread over a foot per year. Check your PH. Weeds don't like lime that much. However, if you have a well, you may not want to use 2-4-D to kill the broad leafs. It may take a few years to fill in.

Zoysia doesn't like shade either.

My Zoysia seems to do better when it's dry and the other grass looks bad.

Next year don't cut you zoysia and let it go to seed. Use the sod cutter and loosen up the ground between your strips before you mow the seeds. Zoysia seed is to be planted 90-100 days before frost, which is about the time it makes seeds in Indiana.

My sod farmer said that Round-Up was only to be used on Bermuda. He says that Zoysia never goes totally dormant. Because of its non totally dormant state in the winter Round-Up should not be used.

Be careful of which broadleaf weed control you use on Zoysia, some will wash the color right out of it, and some will kill it. That's why you should kill any weeds, when the Zoysia is dormant.
