blackberry crop results...

I know some of you guys have tame blackberrys. I started a small patch this year with some root cuttings I got from a nursery (Apache thornless variety). I planted them on April 1, 2011. They are growing nicely, but I probably should hit them with a little more fertilizer. Waiting on soil test results for that. My question is, should I expect any production from them next season? I am new to this and just seeking some input from someone who has done this before. Any other tips are appreciated.

The berries grow on last years canes. We have Hymalayans the likes of which no one has ever seen! Invasive as heck. Can't keep them killed back!

I always get a kick out of folks that actually try to grow the dang things. We have a patch that we let grow, makes a nice impenetrable hedge. (that tears big gashes in your arms and legs if you get too close with the riding mower)

I have four Thornless that I started three years ago. First year no Berrys second year about 24 Qts. This year loaded. It takes about three years to get full production. I had six plants about ten years ago would get about 30 Gal a year from the six plants. I will take picture of them and post. They sure make good cobbler & jelly.

Thanks for the replies. I am hoping these do well too. Fred, after I read your post I was reminded of all the times my dad made my brother and I cut them out of a fence row when I was a kid and thought that this venture might indeed by kinda silly. At least with these I won't be gettin' stuck every ten seconds (lol).
