I have a loss of power, a fair amount of oil coming from breather tube and it is running rough. Should I plan on a full teardown or could it be just the head gasket.

Blowing oil out the breather sounds like bad rings/piston or a scored cylinder wall.
A compression test or leakdown test would be in order.

Could be a cracked sleeve or a busted piston. I have found a couple on these engines.Especially if it has had starting fluid used in it.

where do I check the compression,
this engine does not have glow-plugs
