speaking of turtles

i saw a box turtle in the yard today first one i've seen here in 15 years, where i used to live we caught them all the time and would carve the kids intials on there belly, but my question is has anyone ever saw a baby box turtle ?? i've come across hundreds in my lifetime but never a baby one...

Me either. Supposedly, they spend a lot of time in leaf litter. I see box turtles quite often. I saw a blue racer last night--the first I've seen in years. I'm in SW Michigan.

There are so many running around where I live right now it's rediculous. I guess it's their breeding time so they've been crossing roads everywhere. I usually see two or three sittin in the middle of the road tryin to cross every day.

In my 40+ years of looking at turtles in MD I have seen two small box turtles. When they get almost full grown they travel more looking for mates.

We have box turtles in Charles and St Marys Countys... but have not seen them elsewhere in the DC area too much development and cars.

Used to collect 5 or 6 each summer... before my time my dad had a coon/fox hound that would collect them. It was his favorite dog, esp when it brought back 3 lost piglets a neighbor lost and thought he would never see again.

Speaking of turtles, we don't have box turtles here, but I did see the biggest Snapping Turtle that I've ever seen in my life today. It was tun over on the highway. I was surprised there wasn't a car or 18-wheeler on it's roof anywhere nearby.

I've picked 'em up as small as a half dollar here in Va. Most, though, are about the size of your hand, call it half a soft ball. I've already picked up a dozen or so this year as i drive the backroads. I see far more in the roadway than I do the woods and feilds; I can't help myself, I almost always stop and get 'em safely over the pavement.

Now here's a loaded question!! Are you another YT guy needing an excuse to kill something??? So's the only things left alive burns gas or diesel fuel? OK, I'll set up the reptile world for an ethnic cleansing. Yes. turtles distroy crops. I had a cousin with a turtle that distroyed a head of lettice. Took it a year, two or three bites a day, we figured she was waiting till it turned into vodka or something better tasting. Nothing worse than a cold blooded alcoholic. They all must die.

In 2008 we visited the Laura Ingalls Wilder
homestead near Mansfield Missouri. We saw them
all over the roads, south of Jefferson City, on
Highway 63, size of tennis balls, and larger.
And, lots of run over ones!

Boy am I happy to hear that. It sounded like a 'let's kill it thread', glad it isn't. Nope, I don't go around kissing snakes ether, but I leave them alone. Like skunks and racoons and possums, anything that eats mice is OK in my book. Turtles are just something you can't help feeling sorry for, even the 50 pound snappers- maybe?
