Still working on onan engine. See my post from 6-17-11. This is on brother-in-law's skid loader. He took the coil to a small engine shop and they told him the coil was bad. He bought a new coil and installed it. Engine started and ran fine for five minutes. He then let it sit for 45 minutes and then it started and ran for eight minutes. After it quit, we seem to have no spark to plugs. There is, however, power to the small terminals on coil. The engine is a model 218G-I/105508 with a serial number of 888 332 7934. I read somewhere online about some onan engines having a thermal shutdown, but wouldn't that shut off power to the coil? Does anyone have any other ideas or suggestions?

Theres a "P" in front of the 218 isn't there? The P engines have a trigger on the crank instead of points. Might be a trigger issue. I suppose it's possible they have a high temp shut off. I'd expect to find it on one of the heads if it has one. There is an Onan engine discussion group on Yahoo groups. Thats where some real sharp Onan guys hang out.

Don't know if you have battery or magneto ignition. Does it have breaker points or electronic ignition? I'm guessing by the fact you have power at the coil terminals that you have points/ battery system. A test light should light when applied to either terminal on the coil with ignition "on". Disconnect (-) wire from coil and apply test light. Light should flash when cranking engine. Light burns continuously: wire or breaker points grounded. Light does not come on: wire broken or points defective. Make this test with the alligator clip on the test light attached to a full-time "hot". If you can provide more information, I can provide a better answer. Fritz.

That's where the Onan GURUS hang out!

The Garden Tractor forum below has a member who runs the Yahoo Case/Ingersoll garden tractor group. These tractors used Onans B and P series engines. So post there and he should have an answer.
