What problem are you seeing?

Does it function ELECTRICALLY... no brittle or broken wire leads or insulators?

Does the mechanical advance work?

Is the shaft fairly snug in the bushings... not a LOT of play, affecting point gap/dwell angle/timing?

Well not all that easy but a simple test that may or may not tell you is check the point gap at all lobes. If you can not get the point gap with in 0.001 on all lobes it maybe a problem. If you can not get it to with in say 0.005 it is a problem since if say it calls for 0.025 for the gap then if not with in the 0.005 you have some times when you have a gap of 0.020 and others at the correct gap of 0.025 and that can/will cause some odd run problems
