I'm looking for Turf Grass opinions about Buffalo grass.

I was looking at the Aggie Turf grass website and in doing so, I sure like what I saw about Buffalo grass. It required less water and fertilizer than bermuda and st. augustine and needed less mowing as well.

Seems the only two problems with it are that it doesn't do well in shade or sandy soil.

I'm on fine sandy loam and was wondering if anyone else had any experience with this particular grass.

I have cactus and weeds growing in the yard of my new place and I'm starting to ramp up for a reseeding next spring and want to get my plan of attack down now.

Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

buffalo grass makes a excellent lawn.and it should do well in sand, its all over my farm.be aware it does have one thing against it.unless you have a lot of rain it tends to turn brown and go dormant in heat of summer.it is one of the most drought tolerant of grasses once its established however, and this is why its so prevalant over the southwest in native pastures.its well adapted to withstand any drought. Most folks dont like it though as a lawn simply because it takes watering to keep it green. And our typical stereotype lawn in the US is if its not green its simply no good.We expect lawns to be green, which is why bermuda is used so often it just looks more like a healthy lawn were used to.If you want one with minimal upkeep, and dont mind it going dormant buffalo grass is about the best youll find anywhere.By the way ,this is why the buffalo herds were migrants, they simply followed the green grass north in summer, and back south in fall.Cattle will stay rolling fat on it year round ,and will RUN through bermuda to get to it.At certain times it has as much or more protien than the best alfalfa.excellent ,excellent pasture grass.one of the very best.but not so much for hay because it tends to stay so short.

It is not much of a lawn grass in my opinion. It dosen't have to be mowed often and dosen't take much water. Neither does dead burmuda grass and they both look about the same.
