I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO OPERATE MY FRIENDS CHOPPER YESTERDAY. HE'S NEW TO COLLECTING & TRACTORS IN GENERAL. HE'S ALSO A CITY KID, 23 YRS OLD. NEVER SEEN SOMEONE FROM THE CITY TAKE TO TRACTORS SO MUCH. WELL, HE WANTED TO START A COLLECTION AFTER HELPING ME WORK ON MINE, SO HE GOT A '45 FARMALL H & THIS GEHL 188 CHOP KING TO KICK OFF HIS COLLECTION? HUH? WHAT? WHO'S GOING TO FT. SNELLING? OH, WHY AM I YELLING? THERE'S NO MUFFLER ON THE CHOPPER & THAT'S A VERY LOUD WAUKESHA I-6 GASSER THEY PUT ON THERE. I'LL TALK TO YOU GUYS LATER, ONCE I FIGURE OUT WHO KEEPS RINGING THE DOORBELL.

Good for him.....Better do some modifications so he don't get them big a$$ feet tangled up in the pedals :shock:

Cool,
Some youngsters just get the bug and keep it for life.

I think it is born into us. For some age 3 and others age 23...:<}

The hay was washed three times since it was cut & what wasn't sticks & stems was moldy. The greeness in the bales is the fresh growth hay the baler pulled up with the windrow. Otherwise, it would have been a beautiful crop. I pulled an extra 30 bales off this cutting & it's shot in the donkey. >:v( So, I chopped it onto the sand patch behind the pines to rejuvinate the soil. Recycling, I guess.

I'm just beside myself that it's a city kid with no known farm background, whatever the age! Best darned thing I've heard of in a long time & I get to see it first-hand. Excellent!! There's a faint shimmer of hope for this world yet.

You need to find a hay pickup head for that chopper. You then could just chop it right back on the field. I have done that several times over the years. I don"t remember ever seeing a Gehl self propelled chopper around here.

I would love one of those or a Fox self propelled. Just to play with.

Both hay heads are on the things to get list, the pick-up head & the green-chop head. The first one is mandatory the second one is just cool. The only "green" head in action I have ever seen was on a scrawny AC chopper. It looked like a paddle wheeler floating through the hay & I've never heard a chopper strain like that one did in the tall, thick hay.

Fox Super-D's & the like still can be found around here. I don't know if any are still in use, but I've seen plenty sitting around here & there. I think I counted six or seven on my trip to look at my latest H in Waterloo. Three in one spot! I don't now where all of the Gehls went. I recall hearing plenty about them when I was young. West Bend is only a stone's throw from my place & those little choppers were a big thing when demonstrated on local farms. I bet if I drive around here & look real close, I might find the remnants of one in a fence row, somewhere.

I plan on attending two tractor shows this year with it. The one at Pioneer Village (Ozaukee Co.) & the one in Richfield (Washington Co.). If you'd like to check it out at either show, let me know. It would be an honor to meet another forum member.

not to be a spoil sport but if the kid is as nice as you say then advise him to either draw his hair back or cut it off. GOOD FRIEND OF MINE GOT HIS HAIR caught in a fan belt and his neck was broken, spending the rest of his life as a paraplegic. long hair and spinning turning machinery do not mx

Good call & you didn't rain on our parade a bit. I mentioned before that this is not a machine anyone would want to learn a lesson on the hard way. Your concern is appreciated. I've seen someone scalped to the eyebrows by picking up their hat from under an unshielded PTO. Not the kind of lesson that needs to repeat itself while I'm on the job.

I hope you remembered to throw some potatoes on the ground first!

Hey Mike,
Look forward to seeing the 188 chopper at the Richfield Thresheree September 17 & 18. We have an early Gehl self-propelled restored and running in our display along with other Gehl historical machinery. We feature Gehl history and old promotional films from the 40"s 50"s and 60"s.
