My 92 chev k1500 w/5.7 engine developed a pinging noise in the engine and now is miss fireing on center 2 cyls and carries only 50lbs compression while the other cylds are fine on compression. What has happened here? all help appreciated Thanks

Lift the right valve cover first; if the rockers are in place, then the head, as the two cylinders are bleeding compression across one another.

Allen is probably right. The most frequent head gasket failure I've seen on Chevy small blocks over the years is between 2 cylinders. Usually 4&6 or 5&7

Went through basically the same thing on Dad's '90 chevy truck with a 5.7. His had a bad head gasket between cylinders 5&7. Since we had it down we freshened up the top end and replaced the timing chain.

Since head gasket may be the problem,i have been told to make spacers to put between center and ends of ex.manifolds to keep them from warping when they are removed. Anyone incounter this warping problem? Everything will be cold at time of tare down.

Yes you most likely have head gasket failure. I do these all the time at work. And as for the spacer question i use manifold stretchers every time i remove them,if not it can be a real pain.
