value of Detroit 4-53?

Someone near me has a newly reconditioned engine, asking $1500, but they want it gone so it could probably be had for much less. What are they worth and which tractors had it? I'm guessing Oliver/Cockshutt 1900 and 1950, and no doubt several others.

Hi jason thats not a bad deal as long as was put together right do you know who did the work? I think you are from geralton moveing to kakabkakaakkkkakak you know

Yes, the Oliver 1900 and 1950 had this engine, but there were several different versions of the 4-53 made. Location of blower and exhaust, rotation, etc. varied. Not to mention the type of Governor.
I think the Timberjack skidders used the 4-53 as well, maybe also the Gradalls.
If it happens to be the same as any of these it is a great deal. If it isn't, it can take a lot of time to rearrange things.

They were also found in some one ton GMC trucks as well as marine engines. You need to find more information to see if it is a S, N or T series engine or a generator set engine or marine engine to start with.

we have a kw tri axle dump truck with one.i'm amazed at the power it has for only 4 cyl. that is a real good price..glenn

I sold a rebuild 4-71 the other day, been sitting for 10 yrs before it found a home,Got 6 grand for it.
A 4-53 is a good engine,i got one in a 1855 cockshutt
$1500 is a sweet deal if you got a use for it,otherwise leave it be i say
.

There are 2 valve, 4 valve, and turbo engines.

There are at least 3 SAE bell housings as well as small truck bell housings.

The engine block can be built with blower opening facing left or right. That affects all the other accessories.

There may be half a dozen governors.

I have four 4-53's. They are all different. I'd estimate the cost to rebuild one today would be at least $5000 if given to a DD reman dealer. Others will just install kits, bearings, rebuilt injectors, and recondition the head. BTW, a dealer will usually throw the head away. I've seen hundreds of them in a dumpster behind Power Products Inc in Lynnfield, MA.

Studebaker was the first truck to run the 4-53. Alot of delivery vans (Chevy maybe) also ran them. I got one out of a GMC school bus and put it in a '47 KB-5 International. Many water pumps, generators, air compressors, welders, forklifts, and construction equipment were equipped with them. 3-53's as well.

$1500 is a good price if rebuilt by a competent person.

A lot of older construction equipment used them too. Loaders, cranes, draglines, excavators, etc. Someone mentioned welders but I don't think too many welders needed that much HP. I've seen 2 cylinders Detroits in welders though.

That's a long trip out there. Not much left out of two days with traveling from the east coast of Lake Huron.
A complete running 4-53T would be good to have however..........

Ag equipment on this side of the lake in decent shape (even for a hobby guy like me) is hard to find. Just made 2 trips in the last 6 weeks to North Bay area for equipment. 11 hours one way.
