My dads got a gas 6500 emerald generators in his motorhome. the first problem he had with his generator, he would push the start button, it would start, but when he let go of the start button, the generator would die. That problem quiet, then it started putting out to much voltage. 195 volts. Would it be the voltage regulator, or something else? Thank you for your help.

Is this generator a chinese clone of the Honda 6500W?
Either a failed voltage regulator, control wires shorting together somehwere or an open control wire.

There is a fuse on the panel of the generator that if blown causes the start no run when the starter button is released, as for the over voltage its most likely the voltage control board that has gone south heres and excellent source for replacement control boards.

Onan's been building generators a lot longer than Honda and certainly wouldn't have to copy a Honda. If you google Onan Emerald generator, there's a troubleshooting guide there.

Dad had the same overcharging problem with the Onan 6500 in his Winnebago motorhome about 15 years ago. Found mice had raised havoc in the wiring harness. Dad did a lot of cussin' until I found a nest in the air cleaner of the 454 main engine and the lightbulb lit up. Found and repaired the damage and cleaned the crap out of the Onan's carburator and life was good after that. Never saw it again after Dad sold the motorhome.
