NO GO
Have File Edit View, etc Just NO Back/Forward buttons.
Have to use View dropdown to go back now - PIA

You have two keyboard options that perform the same function as the back button the first is the backspace key the second is a key combo: the alt+left arrow will work as well.

Which operating system? XP,Vista,Windows 7, which one?
What browser and version? Internet Explorer, if so click <Help> <About Internet Explorer> and report which version.

You should be able to press backspace to backup if no text or anything editable is selected. Where your buttons went though, I don't know. You say you have file, view, edit, etc but no back button, but I see nothing that would allow removal of only the back/foward button.

Which browser?

It sounds like you hid the toolbar contains the back button. On Firefox, go to View->Toolbars and make sure "Navigation Toolbar" is checked. You may have to go to View->Toolbars->Customize... to add your buttons back.

If you're on IE, I can't help.

Your back/forward buttons are next to the address block. Try this first, left click and hold on the blue at the top of the page and drag the window to the right. Is it blue or black at the top of the page and did the return arrow appear? If the arrows appeared and the top of your screen is blue go to the left side of the screen and move around on the edge till the double arrow appears and right click and hold and drag the left side in and R/click the blue at the top and reposition the window. If the top is black go to the right top where the red x is and click the button next to it, the middle button. If this doesn't work left click on a bare area in the blue bars at the top till a drop menu appears with (menu bar, favorite bar etc) appears. Scroll down to customize, then in the customize menu go to add/remove commands and hit reset. If you don't have any custom tool bars at the top this should reset factory defaults.

And this was on the net.....

The buttons are missing
If Internet Explorer is set to full screen mode, then the menu bar will not be visible. To work around this problem, follow these steps:
Press F11 to bring Internet Explorer to normal view.
Click View, point to Toolbars, click Standard, and then select the Standard toolbar check box is selected. If Standard toolbar is already selected, go to step 3.
Click View, point to Toolbars, and then click Customize.
Click Front in the Available toolbar buttons list, and then click Add.
Click Back in the Available toolbar buttons list, and then click Add.
Click Close.
