Yellow flowering weed taking over the hayfield

Land is in SW Virginia, near the Kentucky border, family member has 15 acres that had some decent fescue on it last year. When they went to look it over for cutting (they live a ways away) the field was overtaken with these yellow flowers- the stem is woody and the plants stand 3 feet tall or higher, crowding out the grass, then it branches out with limbs supporting the flowers which are 2 to 3" across, and resemble dasies. I did a quit internet search but could not find a match. No, I don't have a picture unfortunately.

I did see some other fields in this area and in north east Tennesee with this growing in it. What is it? Looks like the first cutting won't be as good as thought.

if it is goldenrod I think I remember reading somewhere that it puts out a toxin that kills other plantlife, thats why it can take over entire fields.Bill M.

Mustard weed?

Its not native around my place in northern Maine but you see it in broccoli fields even there. No place else but broccoli fields. Must come in the broccoli seed...

Really wish I had gotten a pic of it, could be either Goldenrod or Mustard!

If it is golden rod I found it very easy to get rid of. Soil test will show what the soil condition is. If acidic goldenrod thrives, but lime will virtually kill it and make the grass grow much better. With proper pH and fertility, grass will force out most weeds.

I got the same growth. I tracked it back to the TS grass seed that I had subseeded with. They said it contained inerts, so you know, let the buyer beware.

Do the blossoms look like wild carrot but they are yellow instead of white? If yes, it is wild parsnip. DO NOT GET THE JUICE ON YOUR SKIN! If you do and go out in the sun, you may get a terrible burn. Try googling wild parsnip. One of the midwestern universities has a very informative article about it.
