Hammer mill screens

Have a small hammer mill and need to make a new smaller hole screen. What size hole would be good for oats and ear corn. Want to keep it fairly coarse. Thanks Ed

I think I'm using about 3/4 holes for earcorn & oats, maybe inch. Also keeping the speed down will keep it from flouring quite so much.

What brand of mill?

A Gehl has twice as many hammers as most other brands and will chop finer useing a larger screen than a mill with less hammers and smaller screen.

Thanks Guys my problem was as you explained too few hammers and too big of holes. Making a new screen with smaller holes to hold the material on the screen longer ED

When I'm feeding all they want in a self feeder I have to grind my ear corn a little finer with a 1/2 inch screen. If I don't them darn holstein steers I feed will pick through it and leave the cob. Otherwise I use a 3/4 inch screen. I have a JD grinder. This is the first I heard of the diffence in the amount of hammers but it does make sense.
