Another ????...........
Couple of fields have a mix of grass and alfalfa that a guy cuts and feeds fresh to his cattle. While it was so dry, the alfalfa was the only thing that stayed green and grew a little. As soon as it rained, the stuff shot right up and is almost knee high now.

I have about 2 acres that is on a bit of a hill that had alfalfa but is pretty much thinned out. How is it replanted? Is it possible to plant again without ruining the grass that is there??? Good harrowing and overseed maybe? What time of year to do it? Would be a nice treat for the mares nursing babies and in good grass times the neighbor could take what I don't need for his cows.

Thanks, Dave

Not an option....... Is that how it is then? Have to plant it right and just use it till it has to be planted again? I have another smaller piece that had a real good growth of red clover that is pretty much non existant now.

Yup do not try it.

Afalfa has toxins in the roots that will kill new plants.

You can inter plant Alfalfa in your fields that have no alfalfa in them now.

Overseed it with grass then.

Ya can't "re-seed" alfalfa. The best you can hope for is to disc it and hope the crowns split.

Harrow and then just broadcast good enough? What time of year?

Thanks,

Red clover only last a coupla of years. It has to be reseeded. I scatter some clover seed every year. You can let the plant go to seed and reseed it's self but you lose that growth for hay. A lot of horse people don't want red clover for horses. I have seen some old alfalfa stands rejuvenated by shallow discing and top dressing. Then roll the ground to smooth it back up.

Here in southern corn belt grass is planted from about Aug 1 to Sept 15. It is rather late to plant it now since summer is here with dry weather. If planted now then a big rain comes then ok.If no rain then seed just lays there.
