diesel pops out exhaust?

what can cause a 4 cylinder diesel tractor to pop flames out the exhaust at higher RPM. Sounds ok at a slower RPM. Too much fuel and a exhaust valve not seating?

Also, could it be overspeeding enough to float the valves?

timing advance in the injection pump is not working properly or worn, common on Perkins engines with CAV pumps

Good call Doug, I'm with you. Many times the 188 Case diesels will do the same thing because the transfer pump pressure is what advances the timing. A weak transfer pump will supply fuel to run but not enough to advance the timing. As a stopgap many times I have loosened the pump and manually advanced the timing running till the miss cleared and locked 'er down.

I should have mentioned that the injection pump is inline, so has no advance, I think.

could it be injectors or injector tips causing it to over fuel????

My expectation would be valve float on the exhaust valves, likely due to weak springs....
