Bearing quality

I ordered a 1 1/8 in. flange, Fafnir bearing from ebay. Made in the USA so far so good. It arrived today. It is listed as a industrial quality bearing. It looks a little under feed. It is smaller in size and weight, than the bearing I want to replace on my flail mower. The mounting holes are also smaller. What's the deal with industrial bearings? Stan

Ag equipment suffers far more dirt wound weed stems, vibration, and weather than indoor stationary bearings. That is about it. Motion Industries should be able to match the old bearing number for number. Jim

There are differant classes of mounted bearings. Fafnir and other flange bearings are listed as small housing or large housings. Example one might have a 62 mm outside diameter and another with a 74mm diameter, but both will have the size bore. DH

You can get the same bearing size in several load carrying capacities. You just measured the shaft size. You also needed to measure the OD and the mounting flange size.

You didn"t "Match" the old bearing. You just got
one with the same shaft size.
There should be numbers on the old bearing, cast
into the housing, or stamped into the bearing case. NOW...go to a professional bearing supply
house and get the CORRECT bearing!

You got a different series bearing. You probably had a 208 or 211 series and you got a 203, 205 or 206...
When you're dealing with bearings the numbers mean EVERYTHING. If you don't know how to interpret the numbers you best find someone who does. Finding a local bearing supplier is probably best as they can generally lead you through measureing the shafts/races to get the dimentions they need to determine the series. Cheap on ebay is great when you know what you need. Sucks when you don't...

I guess it depends on what you call the series... The numbers I posted are the housing numbers. Some of us would refer to that as the series.... correctly or incorrectly.
It is no less a major part of what he needs to know.

Yep! The bearing I needed for the KUHN300 would have been special order from my local dealer at $97.xx plus freight.

I had the NTN/Bower number for it, but not even NAPA or Carquest could get it.

Ended up getting it from a place in California. LocateBallBearings.com. It was $45.53 plus $15.00 shipping/handling.

Their phone is 760-201-4713.

As long as he has the OEM number for it he will get the right one. I gave them the number stamped on the bearing, but they asked for the OEM number to double check that the right bearing had been installed if it had been changed sometime.

By the way, Rod, I ended up with about $225 in parts and welding to get that machine in shape. That includes the bearing, all new knives and bolts/nuts, new gear lube in the bar, etc. That brings the total for this machine to well under $2000 so far. DOUG

Stan,
Late to the reply here, but I have a new Fafnir 1 1/8 bearing, 4 bolt. Let me know if you are interested.
Brand new, picked up to use on my Ford flail, but I am still trying to find the 3 bolt flange.
