OT: Value of Freon 12?

Long before F-12 had a Fed tax and later was taken out of production, I purchased 300# for personal use. I still have 100# in my garage and will never use it. Is it illegal to sell? If it isn't what is it worth? Thanks
George

My understanding is, what is out there can be sold. Dad had a tank, was just under 1/2 full, I think he got over $300.00 for it almost 2 years ago! I know he said he doubled his money, AND he got to use most of it for free!

the market is considerably softer then a few years back. we switched to r-134 and never looked back; even charging it in on top of 134.
still have a bottle at the shop that we use when a customer demands r-12, which were hoping happening again so we can use up the last of it.
I do have a 7000series AC tractor that likes r-12 better then r-134 (it cools better) but it develops leaks way to often to charge it with '12'. r-134 has taken a big jump in price; so i sure wouldn't sell it for less then it's bringing.

Legally you need a licence to buy it.I tried to sell some 12oz cans on ebay and had problems. You could probably sell it on craigslist.A lot of those old cars still use it.

all napa and see how much they are getting for R-12.

Bought a case of cans last year for 150$ for a dealership. I have a 50lb can sitting in shed actually. someone told me you can't even own it now without having your license, luckily i have mine

You have to list it as selling only to certified buyers with a licence. They pulled my add twice.I did get 20 bucks a can from someone who saw my add before it was removed.

I switched some stuff to propane (that had already leaked dry and been cleaned out). Doesn't leak out like 134. Cools like R12. Cheap.

"we switched to r-134 and never looked back"

Well, with the new taxes being put on R134, soon it WILL be time to look back, or just give up on AC!

Interesting concept. Obviously it works. Be interesting to hear from others who have done that.

Propane is a very close match for R-12 refrigerant. Part of the problems that occurred when R-12 was being phased out was that some of the replacements had propane in them. The problem with propane is the fire danger from any leaks.

BEFORE anyone gets to carried away with the propane thing, be advised the hydrocarbon (propane) R-12 replacements are not just propane out of a "pig" in the backyard!

They are (supposedly) a highly-refined product from which corrosive elements have been removed, IIRC, sulfur, for one. This MAY come from the "stink" added for leak detection safety to bulk propane.

So, bottom line is that the commercially-available hydrocarbon R-12 replacements DO work, albeit with a certain amount of fire/explosion danger in the event of a leak, but DO NOT put ordinary propane in a refrigeration system!!!!!

There's a mechanic about 2 miles from me that started installing Propane in AC systems back when R-12 started getting higher. Some government officials found out about it and told him to remove all propane from systems and STOP putting it in or else face fine and jail time.
