OT: Some things I would like better than a spoiler

Why not cars with fueling from either (both) sides?
Why not cars with clocks that set themselves (atomic) so you would never have to fiddle with the buttons at daylight savings time changes or battery reconnects.
Why not cars with generous sized rear view mirrors. to hell with the stylists? Make it a law and let ugly be dammed.
Why not every car's headlights on whenever the engine is running? No more hiding to avoid bushwhacking.....but highly visible all the time?
Why not low engine oil warnings like low fuel warnings?
Why not flashing rear edge door lights to warn others that the door is open, maybe someone able to step out into your path. There are plenty of wires going to the door anyway and dome light switches to detect open doors, could be used for double duty.

We now have compasses, outside temperature indicators, vehicle locaters, and many other pricey gadgets the rich among us can afford, why not the handy, the obvious (to me!)
What's your request for standard equip?

I've heard they are going to put blinking lights on the front and back corners that can be turned on from inside to let other drivers know which way you might eventually turn. I don't believe such nonsense will ever catch on though. :) TDF

A laptop with every car that reads the computer so if it breaks down it will tell you whats wrong.Everything that you have to work on has to be accessable with regular tools,no more special tools that nobody has.A sensor that senses if the car in front of you is stopping and slows you down so you dont run over them even if they dont have brake lights.A switch that bypasses all of the computer shutdowns and lets the car run good enough to get you home as long as it has water and oil in it.Maybe even a separate ignition system that can be switched on in an emergency so the car will run.A battery that has a switch on it and if it is dead you can flip the switch and have enough battery to start and run on until you can get it fixed.

Why not just make them all with the filler on the left?????? We drive on the right side of the road, why can't we stay to the right at the pump?????

There was a battery with a reserve ,you turned switch on it ,,not sure if they still make them or no demand. Most computer systems do have a "Limp in mode " basic running enough to get ya home . There are car makers that do have front end collision avoidance sensors , some even appl the brake ,,,,,but yanno what makes em work ??? More computers and more sensors ! lol

Not bad ideas but...
When you talk about mandating the stuff I immediately cringe at the thought of more
Nanny State regulations.
I'm kind of like Patrick Henry.
If I have to choose between the Nanny State and Death I will choose Death (or the the risk thereof) every time.

Mopar vans have or had at different times, low oil light, oil warning light, with a gauge too, flashing lights when the back doors are open. What really bugs me is the 85 with a three speed tranny got 30 MPG,2005 with overdrive gets 21 MPG

They already have a bunch of the things you listed. How old is your car? Check oil and low oil warning has been around for quite a while as have daytime running lights. I hate daytime running lights because they're usually only half as bright as the normal headlight operation and the tail lights don't come on. I've seen many people forget to turn their headlights on because they mistook the daytime running lights for headlights. My 2000 Chev. truck has a sensor that automatically turns the lights on when it gets dark enough. That's a far better system than daytime running lights. If lights and taillights were on all the time would be OK.

I'm not sure how but we had a 98 chevy that we had a guy disconnect our daytime running lights. thought it might save the light life ha

Maybe some reverse lights that help you see where your going?
Better designed engine compartments, and engines. Got a car that you have to take the intake manifold off to change spark plugs.
You know what? how bout a fairly accurate MPG guage. The ones that are installed now are so off that they are not even worth having.
OR ORRRR howbout a factory jack that is worth something?

I would like for vehicles to have a sensor that detects red lights and if the vehicle goes through the light three or more seconds after the light has turned red in the driver's lane, a gun comes up out of the dash and shoots the driver in the head.

Also, a sensor that monitors the average speed of surrounding traffic flow, plus use of a cell phone by the driver. If the vehicle is doing 20 miles per hour less than the surrounding traffic flow and the driver is using a cell phone, the vehicle would select an appropriate place to run itself off the road and into a ditch or tree.

I'm still thinking about add-ons that would deal correctly with tailgaters.

1. Not gonna see fuelling on both sides, had enough to meet safety requirements.
2. Clocks - don't the GM's with onstar set themselves? I know several rentals I've had over the last few years set themselves.
3. Fuel economy and pedestrian crash compatibilty won't likely let you have huge mirrors. Strap some towing mirrors on there lol.
4. Canada has had daytime running lights since, oh 1987? Works great.
5. Some cars do have a low oil reminder.
6. RE doors, several do have this, some just have reflectors though. Many turn the backup lights on as soon as the doors open too.

Sounds good til you or one of your family runs out of gas then gets wasted by someone texting or putting on makeup while zooming down the road. Or maybe even a drunk driver....... Don't forget, it's the popular opinion of the good folks here that there should be no laws made or enforced to deter any of the above mentioned situations. So, better keep that filler cap on the right side. Makes you almost bubba proof.

In Texas, I cant tell you how many wrecks have been caused by moving the dimmer switch to the steering colum.

Seams the folks keep getting thier feet caught in the steering wheel.

There's a couple of auto design issues I have always wondered about:

Why did they move the dimmer switch to the column? It was a lot easier to lay your foot on the dimmer switch and work it when driving at night than having to use your left hand especially when on curving, twisting roads. I heard the idea came from Europe (figures) but I don't know why they ever thought it was a better idea. Maybe they save a dime a car or am I missing something?
Also, why don they set it up so your headlights come on with the windshield wipers since it's needed and is the law in a lot (if not all) states? Seems like that would be a no-brainer to me.
