Strange ford tractor problem!

I just rebuilt a wood hay rack wagon, so I brought it down to
the farm 3 miles away with my ford 4610 tractor on paved
roads. About 2 miles there on flat road the tractor started
lugging and blowing black smoke! Like it was under heavy
load? So I pushed the clutch to pull over and see if a hay
wagon tire or tires went flat and the tractor stopped like the
brakes were on?? They were not on of course. Anyway I
started off again and the tractor seemed fine? Any ideas?
Could the breakes hung up or something?

It sounds to me like the hydraulics may have been dead headed. I did that once with my 6610, but cannot remember how.

I did replace the hydraulic filter with a new one, maybe that had something to do with it!

I don't know anything about a 4610 so I'm talking out of the top of my head here, but does it have hydrostatic brakes, or in other words, are the brakes tied to the hydraulic system? A 1070 Case I once had, had hydrostastic brakes and the master cylinder went bad, making the brakes come on on their own. Going down the road it did the same thing your 4610 did. I'd shut the engine down, re-start and go on my way. The brakes were stinking like crazy so that was the tell tale sign. I'm comparing apples to oranges here so take my advice with a great amount of suspicion. Jim

I think the 6610 has manual disk brakes, and would assume the 4610 does also. I have forgotten and left mine locked and they do hold real well, it sure pulls hard.

I'm more inclined to think that there's a bearing going south somewhere... On MFWD models we've had hub bearings lock up and actually lock the wheel. A bearing failure in that rear end would be very uncommon tho.
Brake problems... that's not impossible but they're generally not noted for grab and release type problems. Those brakes usually are quite consistent in whatever problems they have. If they drag, they drag all of the time and also probably stop very poorly...
