Just got my 4010 last week and been working in 5th gear and planting in 5th also but would like to explain to my boy the gear shift pattern . I dont know if some of the letters are missing or what but there is physically a Reverse down passed the tow but there is not a letter R there. Also the other postitions are confusion to me so if some one could please post the shift pattern so I could show my boy and understand it I would appreciate it . Thanks

When I was a kid the shift pattern was confusing to me as well.

I just figured JD didn't know how to count.

What is it 1 3 R in the first slot 2 5 R in the second slot and the third slot is ?? Heck I can't remember, it still confuses me.

3rd slot is 4 and 7, and reverse on the 3010 and 4010, blocked off on 3020 and 4020.

4th slot is 6 and 8.

IF I remember correctly.

Always remember that reverse is BACK and TO THE RIGHT. and to select higher ranges move the lever forward and work to the left and then back.. like a slot machine... LOL .... .Had a 3010 gasser , Can't recall if it had 2 reverses or 3 ..but i have run a 2010 that had a FAST 3d RVERSE , I would bet Your 4010 probably has a fast reverse , the Ol Slot machine shifter cn intimidate a new operator , just set your son out in the lot and get him to try all the slots and get aclimated ,, once learned it is like riding a bike ,,. the gear spacin of 1st and 3rd , 5th and 7th works very well for common sense work ,, I have a 4020 power/s ,,That is wonderful , The gears are straitline 8 forward with a wrap around with 4 reverse spots ...

See if this works.

Now I remember why it confused me after seeing sdmikes post.

They had 2 third gears and 2 5th gears.

If they wouldn"t have double labeled the 3 and 5 it would make more sense as a kid growing up.

"torch" out a little between 6 & 8 so the lever can go farther to the right (like the two ranges above it) and then down to find a real fast reverse. I had a 4020 that had it done to.

Like the IH tractors, those John Deers models have a four speed transmission plus a range transmission with high, low, and reverse. The speed transmission gears (bottom shaft) are selected by moving the lever forward or backward with the lever to the left. Each cross slot indicates when it is in a gear. With the lever in right of the slot you can select low range by moving the lever forward or high range by moving the lever back. Reverse can be selected by moving the lever to the right while in high range and pulling the lever back.

There are four reverse speeds selectable in the transmission but the highest speed, and on some models the second highest speed, are blocked out by the shift linkage.

AS with any tractor, once you get the pattern "set" in your head, it becomes easy. All I"ve ever owned was a 3020 and a 4010 John Deere. I"ve got this shift pattern indelibly inscribed into my head. Whenever I get into one of the newer John Deere's, I'm totally lost!

Neighbor's 4430 has the syncrorange trans-same pattern. There is a 4440 in the area with that trans.

I hear ya. I drove an 806, 856, and 1066 for years with no problems. I borrowed a 4020 from our renter for a week and never did figure it out.

I'd just play around until I found something going the direction I wanted at approximately the speed I wanted.

It's really quite simple. First range is 1-3-R1, second range is 2-5-R2, third range is 4-7-R3, forth range is 6-8. Someone may have installed a 4020 shift pattern decal, which will not have the 3rd reverse in the 4-7 range.
