Most everything around here is center pivot nowadays. Gravity systems don"t work here - ground is too uneven, hilly. When I was a kid, we had pipe type irrigation. Every three hours it was time to go out and move the pipes/sprinklers. What was really fun was carrying pipes and sprinklers through a shoulder high cornfield. Then they went to the "Big Guns" - traveling sprinklers - less labor, but still had to be reset every pass across the field. Tied up a tractor too, for moving gun and as an anchor. I"m convinced irrigation is a lot like work.

Good photos till I saw the siphon tubes and worn shovel! Looks lake a Tru-Temper #2. I spent my youth doing that in the Pecos valley irrigating cotton and alfalfa and those tubes are a pain to pickup and move when it's 100F and they've been laying in the sun. At lease yours are small tubes. Where is the photo of your tarp in that dirt ditch?
Thanks for reminding me of one of the reasons I became an aircraft mechanic!

No irrigation to speak of in the part of the country I live in but I did get involved with moving handlines out of the wheat fields when I harvested in Idaho. Those babies get hot in the sun! Was combining along in some irrigated wheat and saw the wheat wiggling about thirty feet in front of the combine thought it was an animal running ahead of me till I figured out I was pushing a handline someone forgot to pick up. Delta,Colorado. In the Uncompahgre Valley,Some in the Peach Valley area(my neighborhood),some on the Cory'bench'.We are about 50 milea south of grand Junction,Co on US hiway 50.

Delta Red, I was just Smiling great big with the gated pipe pics , then even bigger when I saw your T&F Center Pivot, thinking how much less labor is involved when we changed over from pipe to Pivots. BUT I Dannm Near went to hyper-ventilating when I saw them dang tubes, Good grief,,, 6 hr sets, broken ditches, caused by Crappy running engines, usually an old Chrysler 413 industrial on natural gas. or a hard cranking 605 International, when hot it would take 2 pickups to crank one.
I saw you #1 irrigation shovel, Mine didn't have holes in it.
What I didn't see, the most important tool an Irrigator needs.... His LaCross high top, fit like a glove, rubber boots!
Enjoyed the pics D.R. Have a great day!
Later,
John A.
