Way ot storm shelters

I know this isn"t tractor related, but it does go in the ground and a tractor has to dig a hole. Has anyone any expreience with life saver storm shelters in benton il.We don,t have a basement and live on a hill. I this is meant for tractors but this is best place to get a nation wide range of ideas .we are looking at a 4 person tub, don"t think i can build a concrete one for 2500 all together,by the time you ad in all the sealing out all the water and stuff.thank you steve, jodi and 10 month old clayton

If you already have a kitty to buy something or whatever, I have seen people buy a really big plastic septic tank, the kind with big manhole covers and other pop outs, if you are on a hill, slowly, everyday, just keep scraping the dirt out of the hillside, not straight down, that is how you get water and other hangups, just dig into the hillside, heck, old raillroad ties, anything will do for a tornado. Hurricanes are different, heaps of water involved, and this ain't a fallout shelter right? Just tornadoes you just need a foot or two of dirt and something with roots to take the brunt. The door/ hatch will be something to gather ideas on. Personally, i would bury an old shorty shipping container, but still it needs to be below grade and soil on top, and a very secure door. Do a google or bing search, see what ideas people have posted on the web. And just start scraping a hole... less surfing- more digging!

I recall seeing a trailer park with an old school bus burried in a mound for a shelter.
ends exposed to get in and the sides buried to the top of the bus. Better than riding it out in a MOBILE home!
You just need something to keep you from being sucked up, blown away or struck by debris...

Steve, my son has one that he bought in Buckner, Illinois, which is a couple miles down the road from Benton, and could very well have a Benton address. His is very nice, steps are built in, slick as a new bathtub on the inside. They live in a modular home, on a hill in tornado alley. He works odd hours, and his wife and daughter have a safe, clean place to hide in a storm, and he joins them when he's home. If it wasn't so late, I'd call him to see what the name of his is.

On U.S. highway 63, south of Kirksville
Missouri, right hand side as heading south, we
saw a big precast concrete place, that had pre-
fab septic tanks, etc. They had pre-cast storm
shelters with steps. All you had to do was dig
a hole, one of their crane trucks would deliver
and drop it in!

I kind of agree with you, last concrete i bought here was $75 a yard, and by the time you dig hole buy rebar and all i think you'd have that much in one anyhow.Hundred years ago when i was a kid everyone had root cellars that were just a hole dug in solid ground, bridge timbers across the top,and about 6-12 " of dirt over that.I guess it worked we never blew away, but it was a damp dirty place to hide.

Here in central OK. a new precast concrete storm shelter cost the guy next door $ 2500.00 installed , about 3 weeks ago . We have one just like it , 16 yrs. old , no leaks .
I wonder if they have gone up in price sence Joplin ?
