O.T. 88 dodge 318

i have a 88 dodge w-150 4 w.d. 318cu with 72,000 miles, and first year of carb. body injection and not one speck of rust. all of a sudden i m having trouble with it.if i run it 10 miles or 100miles and shut it off and go to start it 5 minutes or 2 hours after sitting,i have to crank and crank to start it,,acts just like there is no fuel or spark. there is no smell of fuel as if flooded,,it has 40 psi of pump pressure while the key is on and while cranking..then once it starts it races the motor to scary rpm s and back them down to idle. put it in gear to go go and it sputters a bit, so i punch it to clear it and it is as if the throttle only gives it gas up to half travel and it is one big fall on its nose with lose of power and then as you let off the throttle and give it the gas it runs like a top until you shut it off again and then its "here we go again". i like the truck but this has me stumped and and quite frankly i m really starting get disgusted with it.. anny ideas as to whats its problem, computer is throwing no codes at all which in itself seems odd to me.any help would be appreciated, john

John, I've got over 300,000 miles on a '90 version of that engine. Very strange as my computer has always been correct in diagnosing a problem.

Try pulling a wire off something and see what the computer does. If you can't get any code...

All Dodges are disgusting, that's why I have 3. You know, last night, I couldn't think of anything to help you, now, I am thinking vacuum advance. Check all the little rubber hoses too. I have a 318 bored to 340, earlier than yours, with the goofy ignition module, your 1st gen computor might be getting old, how do you check if it is lying to the analizer? Good luck!!

Hey John, for what it's worth, my '92 318 has does the exact same trick if and only if it has alcohol fuel in the tank. Runs great but if it's warm and you shut it off it acts like it's vapor locked, let it cool some and it might start but then it behaves like a two-stroke that is running out of fuel, runs fast and weak for a little bit. Starts fine cold.
