Hay around shaft

Hi All,
I have been using a disc mower for a couple of years now to mow some pretty good hay but this year beats anything I have seen. I have run into some pretty thick hay on about 10 acres and keep on having the problem of hay wrapping itself around the pto shaft as I mow. It wrapped it so tight I had to use a knife to cut it off and had to be at least 6in thick on the shaft. When I cut it off it had melted the plastic pto guard. I also remember having a new holland 451 mower that did the same thing. Does anyone know a trick on how to keep it from doing this? I have taken the guard completely off and it still does it. I have been trying to make sure the unit is level from front to back when I mow and mow in the same direction on each lap. The grass gets so wrapped and hot around the shaft and bearing end that I am afraid it is going to ruin it. Thanks in advance for the help.

You need an upside down tent. A plastic tarp- small one, narrower than the tires, but from a couple feet infront of the hitch, to a bit short of the baler. I knew a guy that engineered an aluminum sheet metal skid plate, but all you need is a shield in thick patches right? this is where tall tire spindley tractors come in handy in field work, not just row crops. What tractor and baler you using?

Actually the Hesson round baler does fine with no problems. it is the tonutti disc mower that is causing the problems. I use a JD 5103 that sits pretty high. Maybe if I was to adjust he angle of the left lift arm to be higher off the ground it may work. What do you think?

Had the same problem with sickle bar mowers for years. The grass is cut but still standing up. So when you drive over it gets caught on the PTO shaft. Just as soon as one piece wraps then you have a mini round bale.

Take a seed corn sack or large dog food bag. Tie the front corners to the sides of the draw bar mount. Making it lay flat under the draw bar. Let the long dimension of the sack drag back under the PTO shaft. Leave the back end loose. That will keep any loose hay from wrapping the shaft. Plus the bag is flexible enough that the motion of the three point will not make any difference. Grand Father showed me that trick on a MF TO-30 with a mounted Ferguson sickle mower. I have used it on new high end mower conditioners too.

You could make something heavier but all it has to do is keep the loose hay from rubbing the turning PTO shaft. New PTO shields will not cure the problem. The hole in the shield that lets you grease the sliding shaft will start the wrapping of hay.

The guys who suggested dragging a sack or piece of tarp have the answer. I have a piece of sheet metal, with holes in front corners and wires to tie to tractor. Works great, and a simple fix. You simply have to keep the grass away from the shaft, somehow.

had that problem with JD hay conditioner, put the narrow front tractor on it and stopped the problem

Thanks for the replies. I'm gonna try to make one from a 2x2 plywood with holes to drag it under the drawbar. I will let you know how it works tonight.

Here I am starving to death in the blue plastic tarp business, and you use old plywood, life is so unfair! not. Glad it was an easy fix- just remember it is under there when you back up! And thank you for getting back to us with a report, we ain't left hangin' wondering what became of you! BTW, that is a 3 point mounted mower? Not a trailer? That is why the shaft is so low I suppose...
