when i find a old tractor my instict is to fix it up and get it looking nice. But if i find a rare vintage tractor would it sell better painted or just left alone.can any one help me with his question

If it was my decision on a really rare tractor I would probably leave it as original as I could. If I did a restoration I would document with video and tons of pictures in the before, during and after. Remember a picture is worth a thousand words. Also keep up with any receipts of parts, machinework, etc. This would overcome those doubting Thomas' that believe you had just done a "Dupont" or rattle can restoration. Just my 2 cents worth. Happy Trails...

Hi Lyle! I enjoy your posts! I don't know much about tractor collecting, but I am pretty active in the motorcycle collecting and restoring hobby.

For Motorcycles, if they are complete and all original with the normal wear and tear of time (maybe a small dent here, a little surface rust there, some scratched paint etc...) they are really doing well un-restored. These bikes are hard to find, lots are too bad a condition for this, others have been molested and not original.

If parts are missing, and there is major damage cosmetic repairs needed, better to restore and try to make new.

Not sure how that applys to tractor collecting??

thanx loyd some day im going to get myself a bike drove my brothers harly one time i pretended just to sit on it then i asked if icould start it he said ok i then put it in gear and went down my long gravel driveway he had the look of fear in his eyes he thought i was going to crash hi bike but i had a blast boy did i get in hot water when i got back when i said hot water you no what i really meant!

An original is worth more than a restored one. There only oiginal once. When there painted they all look a like.If you can't do a professional looking restoration leave it alone.

a person i met last year had a 1939 r model case and a diferent tractor i cant remember what it was i dont think it was anything special he sold the two of them for 24000 and the restoration was not even close to my standards hope he dosent read this site and if he does i have to tell it like it is sorry

If you find a "rare vintage" tractor in rare vintage condition , ie never been painted or buggered up , then probably best to leave it alone....and I would also buy some lotto tickets because you gotta be pretty lucky now-a-days to find such a creature.

bad luck has been following me around the last couple of years but i think good luck is just around the corner

I have seen it both ways. I have sold more tractors that I have partially restored. I get them running and working well. Then I take and paint a section to show people how it will look when it is all done. A lot of guys can't do mechanical work , but they can do paint prep and paint them. one in 10 want it left original, but tehywant it running great.

I am much more concerned about how it runs and how good are the tires than I am with bright, shiny paint. When I see an OLD tractor with a fresh paint job, I automatically assume that a major defect or flaw is hidden somewhere under that paint.

I would guestimate that one in twenty may be worth more as original but most are so beat up that they gain a lot with nice paint, because only one in twenty people appreciate an original with its flaws.
