Taps A final note

Arlinton cemetery is one of the most moving places I have ever been to. I was stationed in Va. and the day we went to vist there was a funeral going on and it was a very moving experence.

Fascinating video, Roy.

Though a very simple score, there are few if any other pieces of music so emotional.

Thanks for posting.

But do you know the words to Taps?

Here they are:

2 versions of it.

#1
Fades the light,
and afar
Goeth day
cometh night
and a star
leadeth all
speedeth all
to their rest.

#2
When your last
day is past
from afar
some bright star
over your grave
watch will keep
while you sleep
with the brave.

From the officers manual published 1929 by
Colonel---James A. Moss

1862 Version

Day is done,
gone the sun,
from the lakes, from the hills, from the sky,
all is well,
safely, rest,
God is near.

Fading light,
Dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky Gleaming bright,
From afar,
Drawing, near,
Falls the night.

Thanks and praise,
For our days,
Neath the sun Neath the stars Neath the sky,
As we go,
This, we, know,
God is near.

Though not TAPS, the song linked below is considered the most popular "soldiers song" of the 20th century. It was recorded in over 20 languages and listened to and loved by soldiers on both sides on all fronts in WWII.

There are literally dozens of versions of this wonderful song available on the internet. I have linked to an English version by Vera Lynn, which is one of my favorites but I invite you to listen to it in the original German by Lale Andersen (1939) even if you do not speak or understand German. I suspect that you will find it haunting, as do I.
