Rick,

I think it probably depends on how much hay you're going to put up, how much money you have to invest in the tedder, and whether or not you have remote hydraulics.

I have a two-basket Tonutti brand tedder that I pull behind my 1973 Ford 2000 tractor. It doesn't even know that the tedder is attached. Although I've never tried it, I'm condifent that the tractor could handle a four basket.

I believe that most four basket tedders have hinges that allow the two outer baskets to fold up for transport. I would imagine that some or all of them have remote hydraulic cylinders to fold them up (but I don't really know that since I've never used a four basket tedder).

I do everything by myself, so I only cut about 3 acres at a time (usually around 200 bales), so my little tedder is fine for my operation. It usually takes about an hour or an hour and a half to ted what I cut. I put up around 20 acres of hay, two cuttings each year.

I bought my tedder in like new condition about 5 or 6 years ago for $750.00.

Good luck on your selection.

I've got a fahr KH4 and the Howell's have a KH40. Both are manual fold 4 basket. Mine is 3pt hitch and I believe theirs is drag type. Sure they'll tell you to check out a foriegn made one real good and check parts prices before you commit to buying one. Mine was used with a 12HP tractor before I got it. Neighbor has a drag version of the same that he pulls with a quad.

If you get a KH4 or 40, I have .pdf's of the manuals I can send you.

I have a 4 basket, and I'd say if your time is short, go with the 4 basket. Usually when I use mine it is to speed up drying time before rain moves in, so the faster I can get it drying, the better. I pull it with anything from a Farmall 200 to a 4020 John Deere. The 25 hp Farmall doesn't even know it is back there, so I'm pretty sure hp isn't a factor on a hay tedder.

I am about to go out and tedder 35 acres of rye I cut yesterday. I have had my 4 basket Krone tedder for four years now. It has paid for itself many times over. I know that their are cheaper units and certainly understand on smaller acreages they may be the better choice. With our varied hay crops here we get into some very rank crops at times and it requires 50 horse or more and a sturdy machine. Last year I baled 3 cuttings of 170 acres and only had 20 acres get a quarter of an inch of rain.

4 basket generally does NOT cover twice as much ground as a 2 basket but it costs twice as much or more. Check the specifications and prices.

4 baskets fold either manually or by hydraulics. The manual fold is not so bad for someone young and in good shape.

There is another 4 basket which folds back on itself, leaving the caster wheels on the ground.

If getting a fold up type, park it with the wheels down. If folded up the wheel rims collect water which rusts the wheel bearings.

Unless I missed it, how did you make out buying the 165? And what size harrows? Please get back to the forum with updates after a thread...so's we know you are still there. Can you post some pics of these tedder options? Theres all kinds out there, some are just plain bad ideas....

I cant think of many cases where someone bought a 4 and wished for a 2, but I know of a lot of cases where someone bought a 2 and wished for a 4.
