i have a 7100 jd finger pickup planter that i am trying to setup to plant soybeans. i have used the manual to set it up but i am not getting the population rate that i need. iam only getting 4-5 seeds per ft. and would like 8-9 per ft. thanks for any suggestions.

Are you changing the seed units on the bottom of the hopper?

You have to use bean units and not the corn finger pickups.

The bean units have many more cells to pickup the seeds than the corn finger units do.

I don't know exactly which planter that is, but the way I set up a planter is to measure the circumfrence of the tire. Lets say that is 4.5 ft. or whatever. Multiply 4.5x9=40.5 Now adjust the chain to a sprocket that gives you 41 seeds per one rotation of the tire. You can rotate the tire by hand and count the number of seeds that drop out.

You need the bean cups to spill the beans out,

Or the newer JD seed meters for more percise bean planting,

or the Kinze meter units that are well liked been around a long time.

You take off the 2 nuts and pull the finger pickup units, bolt on the bean metering units.

The finger pickups will not drop a high enough population. The finger meters where not made to drop soybeans at high rates. They have 12 fingers and the brush meters have 60 holes in them. So the radial bean meters will drop five times the seed in one rotation. You can get bean cups that will drop more beans but they don"t singulate them. They plant more like a fluted feed drill.
You want a final stand of 150,000 plants per acre for soybeans. Check your seed and see what germination percentage it is. 90% or lower is not uncommon in soybeans. So you will need to drop more than the 150k to get the stand you want.

JD and Kinze units sell in the neighborhood of $125+-. They are well worth it- they singulate the seeds of various sizes with accuracy like the finger units do for corn. The bean cups are cheap, if you"re in a rush, get them for this year- then look for JD or Kinze used units- about half of new. I have two orphans, since I changed from an 8 row to a 6 row 7000. They"re not hard to find with a bit of time.

Took me a while to find this photo.

One on the left is the soybean seed unit.Notice all the slots to pickup the seeds. Corn unit is on the right.

The bean disk is not mounted in the unit in the picture. It has to be turned around and fastern to the unit. That is a Kinze bean unit. It will fit on the JD planters.
