just overhauled a 8n tractor, used thead sealer on all head bolts, after 2 hours running found water in the oil and smoke coming out exhaust, pulled head off found middle water jacket head gasket blown there Should I have used any head gasket sealer on head gasket, or any idea why head gasket blown? this was a steel gasket.

Sounds like you did not re-torque the head gasket after you started it up and let it get warm. On most tractors you need to start them up let them get warm as in 15-30 minutes shut them down and then re-torque the head bolts. If you do not do that then yep you blow the head gasket and you do it fast

In my opinion there are four things that can make new gaskets go bad.
A warped (non planer) head or block surface. (usually more than .005" per foot of flatness)
Improper torque or torque sequence of bolts.
(includes bolts that are partially stripped and binding or too long, allowing insufficient force between surfaces)
Bad new gaskets.

Improperly cleaned surfaces.

I like to put a covering coat of Copper coat spray on head gaskets. Spray as though painting a car, then let it harden for a few minutes until it is almost not tacky. Then assemble and torque in stages of 10 ft pounds to spec, then retorque after running at operating temp. Jim

try a fiber gasket next time.. and some copper coat..

remember to retorque after warming her up a few minutes too.

only use goop on the wet bolts.. no goop on the blind bolts.

Sound guy has it perfect. Copper coat and re-torque after warmed up. Head bolts that use a torque spec need checked after bring brought up to operating temperature. That is why most newer engine have torque to yield head bolts. They are preloaded by stretching the bolts a little.

Since you had the head and block resurfaced, you need to run a tap down all of the bolt holes and clean all of the crud out of the bolt holes with compressed air,Then you need to see if the piston is going to hit the head with a fiber gasket,If not then you need to see if the bolts are putting enough clamping force on the head, especially where it blew. You may need some washers to get enough clamping force on them.Dont use copper coat on a head gasket that says use no sealer.
