buzzsaw bearings

I am in the process of bringing back to life an old buzzsaw. It is the freestanding rocking table type that is run off of a flat belt. The one bearing on the belt pulley end is just shot. They appear to be a poured in bearing, how do I replace/repour one. What are my options?

Probably a babbitt bearing. You can still buy babbitt from places like McMaster-Carr, but pouring them is a bit of a lost art. The link below gives a thumbnail sketch of what to do about halfway down the page and there's probably other resources available online if you look.

Repairing with new babbitt is a great solution.
Before attempting, the journal must be checked for round, and cylindricity. If it is neither, or has snagged metal or deep grooves, it will need to be welded up and remachined to be serviceable.
The other option to pouring a bearing is to have the bearing housing machined/cleaned, and have a split bushing made to fit the (cleaned polished) shaft. Be sure to have a grease groove in the bushing from the grease fitting, and place the split such that the pulley pressure is not on the crack.
It will be necessary to locate the bushing so it does not rotate in the housing with a roll pin. or dowel. Jim

Old engineer told me he restored line shaft babbit journels by sooting the shaft in the bearing area by running an oxy torch such that it made a lot of soot to cover the shaft all around. Then they assembled the journal and dammed the ends somehow and poured in babbit. The soot provided the running clearance. I never got to see or try it.

I have serveral saw arbors and bearings -also some blades.
I don't know what style your's is so would need to see a picture. Where are you located? shipping could be high on a whole arbor with bearings and sometimes it's difficult to take the bearing off, other times it just pull two bolts on each and they are ready to ship. Would also need to know the size of the arbor shaft?

For a good discussion on babbit bearings go to the iforgeiron forum than go to the power hammer section. At this moment the babbit bearing is the third topic down on page one. About 18 replies so far. Interesting topic. Armand
