The 550 Oliver.

Got the 550 out today so I can work up the yard, level it off and re-plant it. I know the paint isn't the best but it is used around here a lot. My father bought it new in 1958, I started driving it full time in 1960. We have made a few rounds together.

The best tractors and best looking tractors are the ones that are displayed just as they are used. You have one sharp and sharp looking tractor there that obviously earns its keep for you, and thats all that matters. Sharp tractor there, seriously. There's a 550 thats been setting for years near me, but I don't know the folks and don't dare go asking. I'd like to have it, and its all rusted. Might ne a fun restore. And then across the road is a fella thats been using his N/F gas 1700 until about two weeks ago. He picked up a nice W/F diesel 1850 from another neighbor that just didn't have room for it anymore with all of his newer, much larger and more powerful, and expensive leased tractors. His new to him 1850 did what he bought it for, and thats whats important.

Your tractor does what you need it to do when you need it to do it, and thats what matters. Again, you have a sharp tractor there. Use it in good health.

Send that owner a letter, nothing ventured nothing gained. Unless there is historic bad blood, there is no reason an offer to negotiate should be considered an insult. Jim

I had to go look, to make sure you didn't hijack mine! Virtually identical, right down to the darker hood, rust on the side of the grill, and partially torn Oliver decal!

I've had mine since about '76, and its going in the shop this winter for an "overhaul"- just about everything needs attention (although its still usable), and since I plan on keeping it for the duration, it deserves a rehab.

I worked for a neighbor while in high school- '62 to '66- he had a JD 40 and an AC D14. I liked the AC, but the JD, not so much. Went over one day, and he said "Run out to the shop, and bring up the green one." The green one turned out to be a brand new Oliver 550 diesel. Within minutes, I was hooked on diesel tractors in general, and the 550 in particular. Wish they still made 'em.
