OT- Sun cured masking tape

Bought an old fiberglass boat (1962 Scott)- Seller masked it with ordinary masking tape, sprayed the color, then the big D (and I don't mean Dallas) intervened. So it sat for several years, with the masking tape curing in the sun, with leaves and crud accumulating in the boat.

Its almost like a "time capsule"- He had made a bracket to mount the bow chock, and it has rusted to the point that it is unusable, sitting in the same spot (and making a really nice rust stain on the seat) for years. I bought from his BIL- the guy dragged it down, said "if you can get $xxx do it- I don't want to deal with it", and left.

I have stripped the tape as best I can, but much tape residue and some tape remains. Am going to scrape it with a plastic paddle to get more tape off, but does anyone have a trick way to get the tape goo off?

Use paint thinner (mineral spirits). It should soften and lift the hardened adhesive after soaking several minutes.

But if you find thinner is too slow or is ineffective, aerosol brake parts cleaner will do the trick.

Neither solvent will harm the fiberglass.

There is an acid wash called On & Off hull and bottom cleaner. Takes rust, green algae, brown algae stains right off, as well as tar and oil. Doesn't seem to hurt paint, don't think masking tape would be a problem for it. Wash it off with a hose, and avoid the fumes.

I scrape that type of stuff off boats with a chisel that is not super sharp and the corners a bit rounded off. I also spray it with soapy water to keep it from sticking to the boat or chisel as I scrape. This gets a lot of it off then I finish up with goof off .

Back when draftsmen actually used paper, they used a lot of adhesive symbols. They also used a product called Bestine to remove the tape from paper. It soaks through the tape and dissolves the glue, then quickly evaporates. It is still available but hard to find a drafting supply store these days.

Thanks for the link, Roy. I was just havin' a little fun with Alg, and figured it was some kind of product.

We have an Ace just down the road- if the stuff is as good as the hype, I've got it licked.

Sun dried masking tape is a bummer. Use WD 40 one of the few uses I found it work on. Place a clean cloth over the tape area and spray the rag good and come back later for the removal.

Thanks for all the responses. Will try the WD 40 first, because it would be neat if there actually is something it is good for. If that doesn't work well, will see what Ace has up its sleeve.

BTW, I googled Bestine and found many places to get it- but shipping kills ya on stuff like that.
